What did dogs eat before commercial dog food became the norm?

Modern pet food has come a long way, but dogs still share a strong biological connection to their ancestors. That’s why we believe feeding real, fresh ingredients matters.

Raw feeding is about keeping things simple quality ingredients, balanced nutrition and food your dog can actually recognise.

Has your dog ever licked their bowl so clean that you wondered if they’d lost their mind? 🐾

Since changing to Ardam, Emma’s German Shepherd, Sasha, has been licking his bowl for ten minutes after dinner.

Darleen’s verdict? Sasha hasn’t lost his mind - he’s simply conducting a very thorough quality-control inspection. Dogs experience the world through their incredible sense of smell, so when they enjoy something, they investigate every last glorious molecule left behind.

Does your dog do the same after dinner? Let us know in the comments.

Your dog probably knows the household schedule better than you do. 🐶

They know when breakfast should appear, when it’s time for a walk and exactly how late you are getting home.

Dogs love routine because predictable days can help them feel safe. When dinner arrives, the walk happens and their favourite person comes home, life makes sense.

As Ronan puts it, sometimes happiness is simply knowing what comes next. 🐾

What part of your dog’s routine can never be missed without a formal complaint?

Dogs weren’t made for mystery meals. 🐾

At Ardam, we believe dogs deserve honest food made with real ingredients - the kind of food that keeps tails wagging, coats shining and dinnertime worth barking about.

Raise your paw if your best friend deserves better in their bowl. 🐶

Dear Darleen, there are lots of raw dog food companies. Why should I choose Ardam?

A very sensible question from Peter in Sydney and naturally, Australia’s most glamorous dog-news presenter has an answer. 🐾

Ardam focuses on human-grade Australian ingredients, balanced raw recipes, locally prepared meals and convenient home delivery across much of Australia’s east coast.

That means fresh food for your best friend without sacrificing your Sunday afternoon or ending up covered in mince.

Because convenience is a beautiful thing, Peter. ✨

Ronan's got one piece of cattle-dog wisdom for us today. 🐾

One of the best things about dogs is how quickly they forgive.

Accidentally step on a paw, say sorry, give them a cuddle and five minutes later they're acting as though nothing happened.

No scorekeeping.

No cold shoulder.

They're simply ready to trust you and get on with the day. There's probably a lesson in that for the rest of us.

Give your best mate a scratch behind the ears for Ronan and then tell us in the comments: what's something your dog has forgiven you for?

Is the food in that glossy bag actually good for your dog or just good at convincing you? 🐾

Ronan's dropping the uncomfortable truth in our latest video, and before anybody starts writing angry letters, hear him out.

Your dog isn't doing the shopping. You are.

And if something needs $1 million worth of marketing to convince you it's good... what does that tell you about the product?

In this one, Ronan breaks down: 🐾 Why commercial pet food is engineered for human psychology, not dog biology 🐾 What "complete and balanced" really means 🐾 What your dog is actually built to eat 🐾 How to cut through the noise and feed with confidence

You don't need to know everything today. You just need to be willing to ask.

📰 This just in from the Ask ardam desk...

David from Melbourne Victoria has written to Darleen with a matter of some urgency.

His Staffy - an otherwise very dignified animal inhales her Ardam in approximately fourteen seconds flat.

Fourteen.

Is that normal, he asks? Should he be concerned? Is there something to be done about this?

These are the questions Darleen was born to answer and she delivers her verdict this week with her usual poise, her editorial flair, and the quiet confidence of an Afghan Hound who has seen some things.

We'll go out on a limb and say: if your dog is finishing their raw meal in fourteen seconds, they probably like it.

Ronan had some thoughts on his morning walk today. 🐾

Specifically: dog owners don't get snooze buttons and if you own a Labrador? One snooze costs extra.

We can't help with the early mornings but we can help with everything else.

Got questions about raw feeding, switching your dog's diet, or just where to start? We're always happy to lend a paw.

Going against the grain is never comfortable. But sometimes it's the right call.

For years, the default answer to "what should I feed my dog?" has been kibble. Dry, processed, shelf-stable kibble. Sold by trusted brands, recommended by vets, and backed by marketing budgets bigger than most countries' GDP.

Most dog owners have never questioned it because why would they? It's what everyone does.

At ardam, we've chosen a different path. Not because we're contrarian but because the biology doesn't lie.

Dogs are carnivores. Not omnivores. Not grain-processing machines. They have short, acidic digestive tracts evolved to process raw meat, organs, and bone efficiently. They produce a fraction of the amylase that humans produce. They simply don't have the digestive anatomy for a high-carbohydrate diet.

Yet the most common dog food on the market is 40–60% carbohydrates.

The real question isn't is raw safe, it's why are we feeding biologically carnivorous animals ultra-processed, carbohydrate-dense food, and then acting surprised when chronic health issues emerge?

We're not here to tell you kibble is evil. We're here to say: there's a better way and the biology backs it up.

Ready to go against the grain? We're here to help you do it right.
