Disturbing yet unsurprising news article today about the toxic pesticide laden foods our Australian grocery stores are complicit in routinely distributing. Apparently our government is completely ok with our taxes paying for the massive health care cost caused by the poisoning of Australians. While this problem does need to be solved at a government level, I don't have any confidence in that happening in the near term.

Also, isn't it crazy to think that the very things we should be feeding our kids for health, including veggies, fruits and berries are the very things that are now poisoning them? Causing them goodness knows what damage!

The ridiculous statements coming from Coles that “food safety is our highest priority at Coles, and we expect all fresh produce suppliers to meet strict food safety requirements and comply with applicable Australian regulations”, is an insult to our intelligence. Lets be clear, PROFIT is their highest priority.

Now is a great time to be growing your own food and sourcing from local organic farmers.

10 years ago, Brandon Youst started Bootstrap Farmer on a working farm in Ernul, North Carolina. He was growing produce and making meals for his local community. The problem he kept hitting: seed trays were cheap and flimsy. They cracked after a season. So he designed a tougher one. That became the Extra Strength 1020 Tray.

His brother Brad joined to help get it into the hands of growers across the country. From the start, they built for small growers. Market gardeners. Homesteaders. Anyone trying to grow on a budget.

They sold affordable DIY kits. Put out free content. Hired people who actually farm.

Ten years later, Bootstrap Farmer makes its trays in the USA and builds its greenhouse kits in-house with American steel and remains family owned.

To celebrate: 10% off all USA-made trays, pots, and domes through Oct 31.

Built on the farm. For the farm. 🌱

Waiting until the seedling develops its second set of true leaves is one way to determine if a seedling is ready or not - but that is not always a hard and fast rule.

Seedlings grown in cell trays need a sufficient root system in place before transplanting outdoors or into a cold frame.

If the roots have not developed enough before you attempt to transplant outdoors, the root ball may fall apart when removed from the tray.

This can break the fragile new roots and stunt the growth of your plants. 😩

Having a strong root system is the best indication. You can check for proper optimal root growth by grasping one of your seedlings at the soil surface and gently pulling it from the tray or push from the bottom if using the air pruning tray. The entire plug should slide out of the cell tray.

If the seedling is immature it will pull out and leave the majority of the potting soil behind in the tray. Notice how intact that plug is after removal from our 72 cell air pruning tray?

If the seedling is overdeveloped it will come out easily but be root bound. Root binding happens when seedlings are left in plastic pots or trays for too long and the roots encircle the entire plug.

Root bound seedlings are easy to identify because there will be numerous roots sticking out of the drainage holes and when you remove the plug you will see mostly roots with little growing media visible.

The best ways to achieve a healthy root system when growing your own plants from seed are:

🌱Use a bottom watering system to avoid compacting the soil.

🌱Plant in properly sized trays that encourage downward root growth.

🌱Plant in air pruning trays for healthier seedlings and healthier roots.

🌱Pot up your seedlings before they become root bound if you cannot transplant them outdoors yet.
