⚠️ Alert: Central Coast Fox Baiting ⚠️

Central Coast Council has advised that its fox baiting program will run from 6 September - 6 October 2026 in selected natural areas across the region using 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) poison baits.

Affected reserves include:
The Ridgway Reserve, Triple Springs Reserve, Blue Gum Close Reserve, and Scenic Road Bushland. Warning signage will be displayed at treatment sites.

1080 is highly toxic to dogs. During this period, keep pets well away from baited areas and never allow them to roam or scavenge. Dogs can also be poisoned by consuming affected wildlife or toxic vomit.

Symptoms include:
• Excessive drooling or vomiting
• Difficulty breathing
• Restlessness or pacing
• Frenzied behaviour
• Uncontrollable urination and defecation

If you live near or visit these reserves, keep your dog on lead, supervise them closely, and be mindful of warning signs.

If you think your dog may have been exposed to 1080 poison, seek veterinary attention immediately. SASH Central Coast Emergency is open 24/7 at 2 Bounty Close, Tuggerah NSW 2259.

Juni, a 3-year-old Domestic Medium Hair cat, recently visited SASH Sunshine Coast for a very special reason: to help save the life of another cat. When a critically ill feline patient required an urgent blood transfusion, Juni stepped up as one of our registered feline blood donors.

Before donating, Juni underwent a thorough health assessment, including a veterinary examination and blood testing, to ensure she was fit and healthy to donate. She then received light sedation for the blood collection procedure and was carefully monitored by our skilled nursing team throughout.

A big thank you to Juni and her family for being part of our Blood Donor Program and helping save lives. Juni’s generosity helped provide a critically ill patient with the lifesaving blood they urgently needed, highlighting the important role donor cats play in emergency and critical care.

We are looking for potential donors to help us continue saving lives at SASH Sunshine Coast and across other SASH hospitals. If you think your pet could be a donor hero too, we'd love to hear from you! All blood donors receive a free vet exam, blood testing to ensure the donor is healthy and meets the criteria for blood donation, as well as a generous gift pack and Blood Donor Hero certificate. But most importantly, they'll be part of a special group of animals helping to save lives.

We are excited to introduce Dr Teng Khoo, Specialist Surgeon, to SASH Sunshine Coast! Dr Teng combines a rigorous academic background with a practical, down-to-earth approach to specialist care and brings extensive experience in soft tissue surgery to the Sunshine Coast.

After graduating with Honours from the University of Melbourne, Dr Teng completed dedicated internships in both surgery and emergency care and spent 5 years in general practice. Demonstrating early clinical excellence, he was awarded the Paul Gotis-Graham Memorial Award in 2017 for achieving the highest marks in the ANZCVS Surgery Membership examinations. He then undertook an intensive surgical residency in a busy referral hospital in Melbourne, culminating in achieving a Fellowship of the Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists (FANZCVS) in 2024—the highest level of surgical qualification in Australasia.

Prior to joining SASH, Dr Teng spent two years as a specialist surgeon and university lecturer at Massey University in New Zealand, where he mentored future veterinarians while managing complex clinical cases. He is skilled across all areas of small animal surgery but has a keen interest in intricate skin reconstruction, soft tissue procedures, and keyhole (minimally invasive) surgery. Dr Teng also holds clinical and academic credentials in the surgical treatment of ureteral obstruction in cats, taking great pride in performing life-saving procedures (Subcutaneous Ureteral Bypass (SUB) placement and endoluminal stenting) to help pets avoid chronic disability.

Outside the clinic, Dr Teng enjoys hiking, photography, and video games. At home, he is kept company by his two black rescue cats, Anya and Auri.

Cooper, a 6-year-old Labradoodle, came to SASH North Ryde after his family noticed worsening hindlimb lameness that was beginning to affect his quality of life. He was first assessed by Dr Naomi Boyd (Specialist in Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation and Physiotherapist), who investigated the cause of his discomfort. Advanced imaging and an orthopaedic examination revealed that Cooper had ruptured the cranial cruciate ligament in both knees.

To give Cooper the best chance of returning to a comfortable, active life, Dr Richard Looi (Specialist in Surgery) performed bilateral TPLO surgery. During the procedure, arthroscopy (a minimally invasive technique using a tiny camera to examine the joint) confirmed complete cranial cruciate ligament rupture in both knees. In a coordinated approach, Dr Richard operated on one leg while Dr Julia Sumner (Specialist in Surgery) operated on the other simultaneously, helping reduce Cooper’s overall anaesthetic and recovery time.

Following surgery, Cooper was closely monitored by the nursing team, who carefully managed his pain, supported his mobility, and guided him through the critical early stages of recovery. With dedicated care and rehabilitation, he made steady progress, advancing from needing sling support to standing and walking independently. As his recovery continued, Dr Naomi Boyd and Caitlin Duckett (Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation Physiotherapist) developed a tailored rehabilitation program focused on rebuilding strength, balance, and function.

Through the combined expertise of specialists, the rehabilitation team, and nurses, Cooper’s journey became a true team effort. By the time he returned home, he was stronger, more comfortable, and well on his way to enjoying life again with the family who supported him every step of the way.

SASH Adelaide is proud to support Safe Pets Safe Families - Keeping people & pets together and their Community Vet Van, bringing accessible veterinary care directly to vulnerable people and their pets across South Australia.

During June, SASH Adelaide’s sponsorship helped the Vet Van support more than 60 pets whose owners were experiencing crisis, financial hardship, homelessness or other challenging circumstances.

Congratulations to Dr Stephanie Shield!

We are pleased to share that Dr Stephanie Shield has officially passed the board examinations of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, the final and most challenging step toward specialist recognition. This accomplishment is a testament to her to her long-standing dedication, resilience, and expertise in the discipline.

Dr Steph completed an undergraduate degree in Animal Science, at the University of Guelph, Canada, followed by an internship at the Vancouver Aquarium’s Marine Mammal Rescue (MMR). She graduated from the University of Sydney Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 2018 and commenced a new graduate program at the RSPCA NSW. In 2020, Dr Steph joined SASH North Ryde where she completed a rotating internship, followed by a specialty medicine internship, before commencing her residency in late 2023.

Her interests include kidney disease in cats, gastroenterology, and autoimmune disease.

Dr Steph has her hands full with two adopted foster babies at home, Penelope and Hermione, and a standard poodle golden Retriever mix, Georgie, back home in Canada.

Henry, a 6-year-old Domestic Short Hair cat, was rushed to SASH Adelaide's 24/7 Emergency Department when he suddenly became unable to bear weight on his left forelimb. Alongside puncture wounds and lacerations to his paw, Henry was dragging the limb and had lost normal nerve function below the elbow. Following assessment by the Emergency and Critical Care team and Dr Sarah Macpherson-Oxley (Emergency Veterinarian), together with the Neurology team, Henry was diagnosed with a traumatic brachial plexus injury, a serious injury affecting the nerves that control movement and sensation in the forelimb.

After receiving pain relief, wound management and dedicated nursing care, Henry's care team devised a treatment plan to support nerve healing while preserving mobility and function. Following an initial rehabilitation assessment by Johanna Higgs (Physiotherapist), Henry began treatment with the Sports Medicine & Rehabilitation team, led by Rebecca Leech (Rehabilitation Therapist), with support from nurses Giuliana R. and Eugenie T. His rehabilitation programme included laser therapy, range-of-motion exercises, limb-placement training and tailored home exercises. Progress came gradually, and as his wounds healed, sensation began returning to his paw and he started using the limb more consistently. Week by week, Henry progressed from dragging his leg to placing his paw with every step.

With ongoing rehabilitation, collaborative care, and extraordinary commitment from his family, Henry regained his strength and confidence. By the time he graduated from rehab, he had returned to climbing, exploring and enjoying his active lifestyle. In fact, it was difficult to tell which limb had originally been affected. Henry's journey highlights the remarkable potential for nerve recovery and the life-changing impact of early rehabilitation and a dedicated multidisciplinary team.
