Lexi, a 4-year-old Groodle, was referred to SASH North Ryde after hip dysplasia began affecting her comfort, mobility, and ability to enjoy daily activities. Despite medical management, physiotherapy, and hydrotherapy elsewhere, she continued to struggle, and a total hip replacement was recommended as the best long-term solution. Under the care of Dr Clara Goh (Specialist in Orthopaedic Surgery), Lexi underwent a total hip replacement to restore comfort and function to her arthritic hip.

While many owners worry about how long recovery will take following a hip replacement, Lexi quickly showed that, with the right veterinary experience, why these procedures can be so life-changing. Supported by SASH’s dedicated nursing team and rehabilitation-focused postoperative care, she began using her leg soon after surgery and was already up and walking the very next day.

The video accompanying this post shows Lexi taking those early steps with Dr Clara just one day after her procedure, an exciting milestone in her recovery journey.

At her follow-up appointments, Lexi continued to make excellent progress, healing well, and growing more confident on her new hip each day. Her story highlights how advanced orthopaedic surgery, combined with expert nursing and rehabilitation support, can help patients get back on their paws.

Flying-foxes are currently under significant stress and may appear in backyards, on the ground, or in places they wouldn't normally be seen. Although rare, a small number of bats carry a fatal (if left untreated) rabies-like virus that can infect people and pets through bites and scratches. If you come across a bat, please contact WIRES immediately at 1300 094 737 and allow a trained wildlife rescuer to assess the situation. Do not attempt to help the bat yourself.

It is important to remember:
· Do not touch the bats
· Do not feed the bats
· Keep people, children, and pets away

UPDATE: A representative from WIRES and the Australasian Bat Society strongly recommends seeking the latest advice from your local rescue organisation before offering food or water to bats. We will continue to update the advice as the situation is unfolding.

While you wait for a WIRES volunteer, injured bats on the ground can be carefully covered with a washing basket (or similar ventilated container) secured with a brick on top. Baby gates or puppy pens can be used to keep dogs and other pets away from bats resting in backyards or at the base of trees.

Native Flying-foxes are vital to the health of our forests as they provide unmatched long-distance pollination and seed dispersal service and are best appreciated from a distance.

We're excited to welcome Dr Lissie Henderson, Specialist in Surgery, to SASH Perth! As we continue bringing new world-class specialist talent to Western Australia, we're delighted that Dr Lissie will be joining the SASH Perth team after relocating from the United Kingdom. We're thrilled that she will soon be helping countless pets in Perth as part of the SASH multidisciplinary network.

Dr Lissie graduated with honours from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom in 2011 and went on to complete a small animal rotating internship at the same academic institution. She then worked in several small animal practices before undertaking a clinical research role at the University of Liverpool, where she was responsible for data collection and analysis for several research projects. Subsequently, Dr Lissie completed a surgical internship followed by a three-year postgraduate residency training programme in small animal surgery at the University of Edinburgh. She became a diplomate of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in 2020 and has since worked in private referral practice in several countries as a specialist surgeon, focusing on soft tissue.

Dr Lissie has authored publications for several journals and is an active member of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons exam committee. She has been a mentor to several junior members of staff throughout her career and enjoys teaching, regularly providing continuing professional development to colleagues both nationally and internationally. Dr Lissie has a keen interest in all aspects of soft tissue surgery and has a particular interest in interventional radiology procedures, minimally invasive techniques, and endocrine surgery.

Outside the hospital, Dr Lissie enjoys a creative and active lifestyle. She loves painting, dancing, and hiking with her scruffy dog Jack in tow.

Sophie from SASH Alexandria and her dog, Rex, are both blood donor heroes! Just like humans, cats and dog rely on donors for lifesaving care. Thanks to Sophie and Rex’s generous contributions, they’ve helped save the lives of pets and people who need blood.

Australian Red Cross Lifeblood is urgently seeking blood donors as they currently have critically low supplies of the most common blood types. If you are eligible, please book a donation with Australian Red Cross Lifeblood.

Your pet could be a donor hero too! All blood donors receive a free vet exam, blood testing to ensure the donor is healthy and meets the criteria for blood donation, as well as a generous gift pack and Blood Donor Hero certificate. But most importantly, they’ll be a part of a special group of animals helping to save lives.

The SASH Perth team had a great time meeting the Perth community at last weekend's Goldies Day Out event at Landing 7.

General Barks, or GB for short, a 14-year-old Border Collie Cross, was referred to SASH Central Coast by his local vet, Rathmines Veterinary Hospital, after a splenic mass was discovered before a routine dental procedure. GB has a complex medical history, so advanced imaging was performed to better understand the nature of the mass and assess whether anything else was happening behind the scenes.

A CT scan interpreted by Dr Katrina Garrett (Specialist in Diagnostic Imaging) revealed not only the splenic mass, but also two additional concerning findings: a markedly enlarged sublumbar lymph node and a previously undetected mass within the pancreas. These findings raised concerns that GB's case might be more complicated than originally suspected.

Under the care of Dr Ingrid Trommelmans (Specialist in Surgery) and the Surgery team, GB underwent surgery to remove the splenic mass and enlarged lymph node, as well as collect biopsies. Throughout the procedure, Dr Maria Bellei (Specialist in Anaesthesia & Analgesia) carefully managed GB's anaesthesia and pain relief, helping to ensure he remained safe and comfortable. Her expertise was especially valuable given GB’s age and the complexities of his medical history.

When the biopsy results returned, they revealed an unexpected outcome. The large splenic mass that had prompted GB's referral was diagnosed as a benign mass, rather than the aggressive cancer that had initially been feared. However, biopsies of the enlarged lymph node and pancreatic mass confirmed adenocarcinoma, a cancer that arises from glandular tissues. Had GB not been referred for investigation of the splenic mass utilising advanced imaging techniques, these cancerous lesions may not have been discovered when they were.

Following surgery, GB was referred to the Oncology team, where Dr Sandra Nguyen (Specialist in Oncology) commenced treatment with chemotherapy. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of Rathmines Veterinary Hospital and the SASH Diagnostic Imaging, Surgery, Anaesthesia, Oncology and Nursing teams, GB's cancer was identified and addressed at a stage where treatment could begin promptly, giving him the best possible path forward.

Bleue recently visited SASH Adelaide for a very special reason: to help save the life of another dog. As one of our registered canine blood donors, Bleue was called upon when a critically ill patient urgently needed a lifesaving blood transfusion.

Before donating, Bleue underwent a thorough health assessment, including a veterinary examination and blood testing, to ensure she was healthy and suitable to donate. Throughout the process, she was cared for by our dedicated team, showered with pats and cuddles from the SASH team.

A big thank you to Bleue and her family for being part of our Blood Donor Program and helping save lives. Blood donors like Bleue play a vital role in emergency and critical care, providing lifesaving support to patients when every moment counts.
