Just a little snapshot of things here. I’ve been pretty sick and just going day by day right now. Re bird flu - my chickens have always got out of their enclosures every single day. We currently have 14 enclosures here and the day is regimented in to allocated free range time slots. With bird flu rapidly taking over Victoria, at some point free range time will end. Right now I’m letting everyone out every second day to make this process less stressful. I’m going to gradually reduce their time out. We haven’t had any reported cases in the area for 3-4 weeks, but is inevitable. It’s all so bloody sad.

I just want to share this post. The “take my roosters I hatched” emails never ever end. I try and contain my rage in the emails back, but lately I can’t contain my rage. It is NOT sanctuaries job to take on the animals YOU breed and cannot then look after. It blows my mind. Just stop hatching if you can’t keep them. Stop.

Favourite Faces - The Little Babes Edition

I know you guys love favourite faces, so here’s a Little Babes edition. The Little Babes are a group of chickens I brought home from my grandfather’s nursing home in Feb, 2020. Sadly there’s now only 3 original members left. Eyeliner Babe passed away from heart failure a few weeks ago and It’s A Knockout Babe died the following day from repro cancer (although she wasn’t an original member, she felt like one). The Little Babes now have 6 newish members in their flock and they are doing great.

Overnight our fundraising campaign hit $11,100. Thank you so so much!! Even though we haven’t hit our goal, our two quarantine pens have been started. These are so important here because I’ve run out of enclosure space on the property. Every single enclosure here has a flock living in it. So these will be for new chickens who come in until they are ready to join a flock.

Today’s LP News - Vet Day Edition

Photo One - Jefrey With One F had his acupuncture today and he is doing soooo much better. Darling old boy has seen so much darkness, it’s lovely to see him doing so well.

Photo Two - Magpie spent time with vet nurse (and LP volunteer) Sally writing up vet notes.

Photo Three - The Golden Child, Magpie and The Price Is Right all had to get implants today. After being so malnourished and starved in their previous “home” they are now getting proper food and their bodies are thinking they must lay eggs. Sadly their reproductive systems are all inflamed and not healthy enough to lay eggs without putting their lives in danger.

Photo Four - With well over 150 hens here, we go through so many implants every week. Today it was eight implants.
