On Tuesday we spent the morning at Mandurah Community Aged Care in Dawesville, with the animals getting lots of love!
We had to double check a couple of residents didn't take off with a new reptile pal snuggled up under a blanket, or cozied up to them in a warm jumper 🥰

Reptiles are perfect therapy and companion animals.
Low maintenance, calm, no fur to clean up and just happy to go with the flow.

SNAKEZ N THE HOOD.

This young tiger snake is flaring out its upper body and neck in a defensive display called "Hooding."

It views me as a potential predator so is trying to make itself look as big and scary as possible so that I don't eat it.
Luckily I already ate, so I just relocated it down the road to the lake instead.

Noongar names- Dobitj, Dukayj, Dukitj.
Common names- Dugite, Spotted Brown.
Scientific name- Pseudonaja affinis

Kids playgrounds can be a tempting place for a snake to pass through.
Tiny humans dropping food around brings in a lot of mice and rats. There's quite often fresh water to rehydrate with after a belly full of rodents too.

This stunning dugite was actively chasing a rat through a playground, and by the looks of that tum-tum, he'd already eaten at least one already.
There were lots of kids around, but he completely ignored them and just focused on his very important work as a volunteer rodent control officer.
Very typical behaviour for a snake. They have no interest in us.
He made his way into the clearing of a garden bed to bask in the sun and have a rest after all the action.
He wasn't causing any trouble at all, but there was a high risk of him being interfered with by an overly curious child, so a phone call was made to the council to have him relocated.
It was a quick and easy catch and he was very polite and well behaved. Not too keen on getting in my bucket though but that was my fault as I hadn't laid the towel out well, so he had some trouble getting under it.
I relocated him a couple of hundred meters away from the park, in the scrub near it.
Out of direct danger from the children, but close enough to still contribute to rodent management in the area.

Thank you to Simon who called the City of Rockingham to let them know this snake was chasing a rat through the playground.
Simon was so great, he kept his eyes on the snake and kept everyone back at a safe distance until I could get there. An easy job made even easier with lots of sets of eyes to help me track it as it darted in and out of the bushes. Thank you to everyone that helped!
It always impresses me that the City of Rockingham organises relocators for the snakes in playgrounds. Not many other councils do, unfortunately.

Sweet juvenile dukayj relocated from a home in Golden Bay.
