Sssssspring has Sssssssprung!

As we move into the 2nd month of Djilba ( or the 1st month of Spring ) our Reptile friends are on the move!

They're coming out to bask more as the weather warms up.
They're on the move to fill those empty brumation tummies.
The lads are moving around and venturing out of their usual home zones in hopes of securing a romantic encounter with a pretty lady snake 🥰

With increased movement, there's increased chance of encounters.

Us humans are starting to get to work in our gardens more too.
Be prepared and safe while doing so.
You might just disturb a reptile friend who was sheltering in, or passing through the overgrown garden.

When gardening, wear long, loose pants, good, sturdy covered boots & good, THICK gardening gloves.
Have a Snake bite specific bandage ($12 at most pharmacies) and your phone with my number under "Snake Catcher" ON YOU AT ALL TIMES.
My number is 0433 590 721. Have it programed in your phone, ready to go.
Try to get into the habit of having these items ready to go in a bum bag/fanny pack EVERYTIME you're getting ready to work in the garden.

Brush up on your Snake bite First Aid, I'll repost an informative video on that soon, so stay tuned.

In case of a bite, remain calm, remain STILL and call 000 IMMEDIATELY.

Use a leaf blower to blast any particularly overgrown areas before you go shoving your hands in. If you don't have a leaf blower, use a hose. Just give anything a chance to move out of the way if they can.
Use a rake or broom GENTLY where you can so you don't hurt anything.

Think about what you plan on planting. Low lying shrubs provide ground cover & shelter for animals, so if you want to lesson the chance of a reptile moving in, choose something with a define trunk or stem, that has the foliage higher up.

Keep those lawns cut low!

Keep debris like wood & fencing, up off the ground to reduce shelter sites.

Keep pet feeding areas clean.
Either feed your animals inside, or clean up any unfinished food as soon as possible to reduce rodents feeding on left overs.
Rodents bring in snakes.

If you're looking to kill rodents on your property, make sure to use more natural methods and NOT Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARS) as they will harm our native animals if they then feed on a poisoned rodent.

If you CAN live safetly with a snake on your property, we absolutely encourage that!
They are the best natural and FREE defence against introduced rodents!
Pop some shallow dishes of water and a "Snake hotel" with sheets of tin, rocks & branches piled up in a corner of your property to encourage them to stay there and not venture too close to your house.

Please share this post to reach as many people as we can, and as always keep your eyes on the pinned post at the top of my page which has the dates and times for our Snake Safety Education events.
We'd love to see you at one!

End of season wind-up with Serpentine Jarrahdale Rugby League & Sporting Club
What an awesome day, and an awesome club.
The kids were so cool and we had such a great time.

We brought along an abundance of snakes and lizards, colour-ins for the kids and Snakes and Ladders board games for the families.

A huge thank you to Mini Medusa Willow for all of her help today. I couldn't have done it without her.

We'll have these stunning Bobtail prints from Artist Kindred Sin available for purchase tomorrow at the Serpentine-Jarrahdale Serpents Rugby League Club wind-up.
This photo doesn't do the colours justice.
In person, they're so rich and deep.
We'll be ordering more prints from Kindred Sin soon, and Sandi is working on a SWCP and a Woma for us too. Much excite!
She doesn't consume as much water as AI data centres and her work has REAL soul!
