Why does cat urine stink SO badly? 🧪🤢
Cat urine is chemically very concentrated compared to many other animals. It contains:• Urea → breaks down into ammonia (that sharp “cat pee” smell)• Uric acid crystals → cling to surfaces and keep reactivating with humidity• Felinine → a sulphur-containing amino acid unique to cats that creates strong odours as it breaks down• Pheromones and hormones → especially strong in entire cats and spraying behaviour• Bacteria → once urine sits, bacteria rapidly multiply and intensify the smell
The reason old urine smells even worse over time is because the urea decomposes into ammonia compounds while uric acid crystals remain embedded in carpets, grout, timber, fabrics, and concrete. Standard cleaners often only remove the surface stain, not the chemical compounds underneath.
Enzyme cleaners work differently by helping break down the organic compounds at a molecular level instead of simply masking the smell with fragrance. They target proteins, uric acid residues, and waste compounds to neutralise the odour source properly 🐾
We personally recommend Trueeco cleaners — they’re pet safe and help break down urine compounds instead of just covering the smell.
🚫 Avoid ammonia-based cleaners — to cats, ammonia can smell similar to urine and may encourage remarking.
Especially important in multi-cat homes, catteries, stud housing, travel crates, and litter areas where odour molecules can build up fast.
