We are very excited to announce our Sustainable Aquaculture Feed Project (Australia).

It might come as some surprise, but we not only do insects, we also have worked in Aquaculture for many years. We are applying years of research into action by creating sustainable aquatic feed for Murray Cod (Carnivorous) using aquatic invertebrates and insects. This is a very exciting ambitious project for the following reasons:

- Develop a sustainable feed source for Fresh Water Fin Fish (namely Murray Cod) to reduce or replace pellet based food. This will be achieved using 6 separate food production systems.
- Remove waste from the ponds (Ammonia, Nitrites, Nitrates) and improve water quality using natural cycles (zero water discharge aquaculture system).
- Reduce operating costs and increase income by embracing new technologies.
- Benchmark a new innovative cricket production system which has potential to create sustainable protein in a very efficiently manner with little maintenance.
- Increase use of renewable energy- solar power.
- Convert fish waste into food, and create a zero discharge aquaculture system.
- Improving the economics of Aquaculture by lowering food, electricity, food and labor costs.
- Develop a sustainable food source for crickets as well (typically use grain based pellet diets).

Welcome Inprotin to our partnership program. The great thing about what we do is we meet amazing people and groups who are passionate about sustainability and the huge potential of insects to feed the masses.

These guys are amazing, and we had a great catchup via our zoom consults to discuss insect production and sustainability. These guys have set up a mealworm farm and are exploring the options for human consumption. For more details visit their page at http://www.inprotin.com.

Welcome guys, and we look forward to further discussions, brainstorming and info sharing.

The Worlds Most Comprehensive Mealworm Breeding Book has just been released. It covers yellow mealworms (Tenebrio molitor), giant mealworms (Zophobas morio), for both small scale (hobbyist) and commercial.

With over 20 chapters, 100 sections and hundreds of photos it is a complete guide. To celebrate the release we are giving a 20% discount code for any mealworm book. Just go to https://www.breedinginsects.com/our-products/ and enter the discount code: mealworms. The discount is valid till 20th February.

This project was big….with thousands of photos and hundreds of videos taken over a 18 month period. First we had to renovated a 6m (20 foot) caravan and converted it into an insect business, then benchmarked its production. Doing this took time, and we estimate we spent as much time obtaining content for this book as we did running the insect farm. Once we got the content it then took months to configure photos to web format, write the book and upload it to a online format. We had additional challenges such as running our business in the middle of natural disasters (fires, floods), covid and then some pests infestations for good measure…but we got there in the end.

We trust this resource will save you years of sweat, blood and tears. If you are serious about breeding mealworms or generating income from home, this guide is a must.

Thought we would share a enquiry about breeding insects in tropical Africa...

"In cricket farming two major expenses are labor and heating. If you are in a warm tropical environment ( ie Sierra Leone) with a cheap labor force then you are well positioned. There are numerous ways to breed crickets, but the most common (in western countries at least) is using containers. A 7 container system (70L) will generate around 1kg of crickets per week. This is a high production rate feeding on chicken pellets and maintaining temps above 35 degrees. Less optimal conditions will get low production rates. One consideration in breeding crickets is they really need above 35 degrees to be productive so having heat in times of low temp is important and so are pests.

If you need more info be sure to check out the commercial page https://www.breedinginsects.com/commercial/ which has further info on production rates, markets and common mistakes. Our books provide step by step instructions on how to breed crickets."

Its Coming Soon!! Progress on the new Mealworm Manual is going well, with around 80% complete for the first stage release. Given the amount of content we are adding, we have decided to stage its release as outlined below. Please note this is a guide only and subject to change. For all the partners doing mealworms, you should already have access to the draft book.

We plan to produce a cheaper "hobbyist" version and then a more detailed "commercial version". We also plan to do a revised version of the cricket book after the initial release of the Mealworm book.

Early January– Yellow mealworms, Hobbyist, Most sections completed (with some coming soon sections), no Videos

Mid January- Yellow Mealworms , Hobbyist and Commercial, Most sections completed (with some “coming soon” sections), no Videos

Early February– All sections except videos- Yellow and Giant Mealworms, Hobbyist, Commercial, no Videos.

Mealworm Videos– After the revised version the cricket book we plan to do videos for mealworms. No firm date can be provided as yet.

Its been a big project to photograph, format and upload hundreds of photos with associated content, however it will be very rewarding once finished. To be advised when the book is ready for purchase, please email me at [email protected]. Enough waffling....back to editing!!

We have now created two new sections of our online book showing how to make a large scale water and food dispenser (Section 5.3, 5.4- four different types in total). These are the ones we use and are reliable and easy to make. Made from 1L chicken water dispensers, they will feed a full container of adult crickets (70L, approximately 3000 crickets) for 7-10 days depending on climate and amount. Full photos and description on how to build them on our online (instant access) book. https://www.breedinginsects.com/our-products/ If you bought the old PDF version of the book and want to be updated with the new and improved online version which is will get updated regularly then email me at [email protected].
