I honestly almost skipped this one, l didn’t think The Vet Tribe emergency medicine course would apply to me given I’m still a student. I was wrong. school teaches the physiology, it doesn’t always teach you what to actually do in the moment. the course breaks down real cases with detailed notes, what to look for, the red flags, the actual decision-making process, not just theory. it helps close that gap early, before you’re doing it for the first time under pressure on clinical rotations.

People LOVE to act like there’s an expiry date on your dreams.

Like if you’re not finished studying by your mid-20s
you somehow did life wrong.

Meanwhile healthcare careers are literally built
on delayed gratification.

You sacrifice time
income
relationships
comfort

to build something meaningful long-term.

And yes
sometimes that’s terrifying.

But I’d rather be 32 and a vet
than 32 still wondering “what if.”

Getting rejected from your dream schools
feels like your whole future collapsing.

Especially when you’ve worked toward something for years.

What no one tells you is
there are so many alternative paths
that still lead to the same destination.

Studying overseas wasn’t our original plan.
It was a pivot.

A scary
expensive
emotionally messy pivot.

But it also built resilience
independence
and perspective we never would have gained otherwise.

If you’re in a rejection season
this isn’t the end of your story.

I had mostly Bs in college, struggled with math, never stood out academically. I thought that meant I wasn’t cut out to be a vet, so I shelved that dream for years, convinced it just wasn’t meant for someone like me.

turns out only 10-15% of applicants get into vet school on average. I got in with a mid to low GPA. what actually got me there wasn’t a perfect transcript, it was experience. hands-on hours, work in the field, showing up consistently, over and over, even when it was hard to keep going.

if your grades aren’t where you think they need to be, that doesn’t mean the door is closed. there’s more than one way in, and grades are only one part of the picture admissions committees actually look at.

our full guide on how I actually did it is linked in bio, comment vet school and I’ll send it to you!

grades never measured whether I was capable. I’m proof of that. follow along, we talk about the real path into this profession, not just the highlight reel.

Most MCAT stress isn’t about intelligence.
It’s about the constant feeling that you’re never doing enough.

I remember sitting there with ten tabs open, flashcards everywhere, telling myself I just needed “one more week” before I started practice exams.
But the truth was I was scared to see where I actually stood.

The biggest shift for me was realising that progress in this exam feels messy.
You don’t suddenly become ready.
You become ready by repeatedly feeling unready.

Once I stopped trying to protect my confidence and started treating wrong answers like training reps, everything changed.
My study sessions became more focused, my anxiety became more manageable, and for the first time I felt like I was actually moving forward instead of just staying busy.

If you’re in that phase right now where you feel overwhelmed but also weirdly stuck, you’re not alone.
This exam has a way of making very capable people doubt themselves.

Comment MCAT and I’ll share how I structured my study phases.

Starting professional school later changes your mindset in ways I didn’t expect.

When you’re older, you don’t have the luxury of drifting.
You feel the time pressure differently.
You analyse risk differently.
You approach studying like it’s directly tied to your future security… because it is.

There’s less ego and more intention.
Less comparison and more internal accountability.

And honestly, that shift might be one of the biggest advantages mature students have.

Did you start your degree later than planned?

I hated flashcards and thought that meant I was stupid.
Turns out nobody told me vet school’s whole study playbook (Anki, flashcards, drill and repeat) is built for people who learn by listening or reading. Took me years and a 16 question test to find out I’m visual and kinesthetic, so none of it was ever going to click for me.
If the “normal” way of studying has never worked for you, you’re probably not broken, you just haven’t found what actually fits your brain. Swipe to see what does it for me. And follow along, we talk about the stuff vet and med school don’t hand you a manual for.

Anya (med): up to 4,000 hours of mandatory unpaid clinical placement. That’s close to 2 years of full-time work.

Jackie (vet): 52 weeks of mandatory unpaid placement. Basically 1 year of full-time work.

Combined, that’s 3 years of free labour just to become the healthcare professionals Australia needs.

Comment your degree + your unpaid hour count. Let’s see the real total across everyone watching this. 👇
