I chose to begin my practice with Key Equine Therapy...

Because so many bodywork approaches ignore the nervous system and try to "make" the body do things before its ready.

Key Therapy taps straight into the nervous system via the skin without sending pulses through the entire body.
Its targeted to a small area but the frequencies signal the CNS to stop guarding & allow the body to use its energy for healing, tissue repair & recovery to the specific area of treatment.

This allows the horse to settle into a bodywork session and get the most out of it.

Its the first thing I'll use if I suspect the horse needs deeper support, has pain or is overstimulated by hands + environmental stresses we can't always control.

I mean if your body aches just from life...

Imagine packing around an extra 70kgs + a saddle rubbing your shoulder blades because you lost muscle while your human had a busy 3 months...

If it were us, we might give ourselves a quick lecture to just toughen up, take a panadol (or spoonful of cement as the old boys say)

🐴 But when its our horse's body & long term soundness at stake,

We do need to think about how their body holds up to our demands on it

and how can we support them even during non riding periods?

✨️ Remember a strong, fit horse with healthy topline has a better chance of carrying their rider in balance than a paddock puff who gets a trail ride every 2 weeks.

The fit horse can adapt to carry weight from the rider because their tendons and muscles are used to stretching, taking load and have a good range of motion available to prevent injuries & absorb a riding mistake.

An unfit horse will be unbalanced with shorter muscle length, stiffer joints & a body fighting to stay upright with a rider. They will be heavy on the forehand because they don't have the physical strength to collect & lift from behind.

This means they brace in their back & use whatever they can to oblige us, even if that means risking future injuries, kissing spine or navicular.

✨️Some ways to support your horse so they can carry you when you are ready to ride,

🔸️ keep them in some form of regular exercise even if its groundwork, in hand exercises, liberty work or being ponied off another horse a few times a week

🔸️regular grooming with a curry comb to stimulate circulation, lymphatic flow & toxin removal from muscles

🔸️regular saddle fit checks, you can learn to check your saddle fit but also get someone to eyeball how balanced you're sitting and if your horses body changes have affected its balance.

🔸️scheduled maintenance bodywork sessions to stay ahead of problems, restore healthy movement through the muscles, fascia & tendons before new compensating patterns become a habit or negative behavior.

- if there's no one in your area - I can recommend resources ☺️
