Its Medkey Impulse therapy...

The latest in Bioadaptive Impulse Therapy or "key therapy" a type of technology thats been around for over 20 years.

This has been in the sports injury world for quite some time now but recently adapted to horses and there's plans to also apply it to dogs.

The major difference between key therapy and PEMF or TENS is the type of signal and what it acts on.

Instead of throwing broad waves or a constant signal that overwhelms nerves to bypass pain,

Key therapy uses varying frequency lengths to interrupt nerve signal patterns that cause tissue resistance &
lower sympathetic tone (the bodies flight & protect response) but then start healing.

The signal is localized and precise to the area under the probe, however due to the intricate wiring of the nervous system and fascia,

the effect is widespread throughout the body.

What this means for horses is that it clears "error messages" the horse’s nervous system has been sending to muscle groups & tissue that show up as

🔸️sensitivity (headshyness, muscle guarding)
🔸️reactivness (spooky behaviour, emotional dysregulation)
🔸️pain signs when there's no clear cause,
🔸️difficulty progressing with training
🔸️uneven limb loading
🔸️stringhalt
🔸️body compensation etc.

Its also effective in injuries like tendon strains & laminitis to manage inflammation & swelling.

A block of treatments is recommended for best results rather than a once-off because of the cumulative nature of this therapy and how the body integrates changes.

Medkey therapy is most effective within a bodywork program to address postural imbalance, compensation and mobility.

However its been used in humans to manage symptoms of cancer pain, neurodegenerative disorders, spinal injuries, neuropathic pain and many other chronic conditions.

Safe to use on most horses except pregnant mares,

correct use of Medkey therapy by a certified practitioner means horses are not pushed over tolerance levels and protocols are in place to guide treatment.

The owner was devastated...

When her young OTTB developed a taste for flatweed & was diagnosed with the dreaded stringhalt in January.

They did everything.
He was removed from pasture, walked every day, had bodywork, taping & dry needling to help relieve the symptoms.

The best treatment vets can offer is a high dose of muscle relaxants like what people with MS or stroke victims take to relax tight muscles.

Beyond that there's no cure or treatment.
Just wait & pray they recover over time.

So she reached out to see if we could give Medkey Impulse Therapy a try.

This type of therapy accesses the nerves in the superficial skin layers to reduce muscle guarding but also goes deeper into the body via the CNS and helps re-energize areas of tissue damage to promote healing after injury.

The impulse changes its frequency & signal to interrupt dysfunctional nerve signals,

which in this case are overactive & misfiring into damaged muscles
causing excessive contraction & spasms.

Medkey therapy works on calming the overall nervous tone to quieten those signals and reduces soreness in fatigued muscles and compensation from all the extra movement.

We paired this therapy with daily walking & targeted leg exercises to rebuild neuro-muscular communication & prevent further muscle loss.

So far his response to the therapy has been exciting with improved hind leg control and finding his normal stride again.

There's still periods of the jerky movements especially when stressed or tense and his trot will take time to normalize, but he's come a long way from being unable to walk at all.

As his body continues to heal, we've extended the time between treatments to monthly and I expect to conclude his treatment very shortly.

Pre & Post Ride Back Checks Matter 🐴

One of the most valuable habits you can develop as a horse owner is checking your horse’s back before and after you ride.

Not just to see if they’re “sore” but to observe how they are coping physically with the work you are asking them to do.

✨ Does the back feel soft and supple or tight and reactive?
✨ Is there symmetry from one side to the other?
✨ Does your horse comfortably perform a belly lift?
✨ Has the shape of the back changed after work?
✨ Does your horse look more relaxed and connected after the ride or more braced and fatigued?

Every stride, every compensation, every change in balance, hoof comfort, rider position, saddle fit, and posture travels through the back. Often, by the time horses become girthy, cold-backed, buck, rush, hollow, or resist work, the body has already been compensating for some time.

Your horse shouldn’t need to “warm out” of discomfort when you first get on.
They shouldn’t consistently feel tight, reactive, or hollow at the beginning of every ride.

Those subtle changes are valuable information to identify problems and recognise progress.

✔After a good ride, your horse’s back may feel:
- Softer & fuller
- More uniform in tone
- Comfortable to lift through the core and thoracic sling
- Improved shape

That tells you the work supported the horse rather than overloaded them.

Observation is your superpower.

The more familiar you become with your horse’s normal, the earlier you can recognise changes and the more meaningful conversations you can have with your saddle fitter, bodyworker, farrier, vet, trimmer, or coach.

Recognising changes in posture shape and function will often occur first so that we can be proactive before the horse has to show behavioural alterations.
