Turning over the compost heap, I noticed a lot of black soldier fly larvae. Very happy! It is still cold here and very wet so I was curious as to what the temperature of the compost was. When I turned it over, water vapour can be seen rising.
38 deg C on the probe. Only inserted about 15 cm but still interesting! No wonder the larvae are still happy outside. 😁

See the "windows" on the abdomen? Just where the hind legs connect? These are like little ink tank level indicators and show that this male BSF has used up his "genetic material" in mating. So very cool!! 🤩

When you get your environmental conditions right, and your feed to larvae ratio, you should end up with frass that is light, fluffy and easy to sift and separate from the larvae.

Did you know that female Black Soldier Fly lay between 500 - 900 eggs in a clutch. They will take approximately 3-4 days to hatch in a warm environment. 1 gram of eggs could produce over 25,000 baby larvae!! Incredible!! 🤩

We've had a high level of interest in our BSF Farming 101 course so far! Clear to see that people are curious and want to learn more, but just didn't have a clear access point.
The next Faciliated Program launches on June 17th. In the Facilitated Program, the content is measured out weekly over six weeks. Each week is supported with a weekly "live" check-in with our trainers to talk through the learning outcomes of that week's modules and to answer any questions directly. Hi! Just a quick post to share that we've launched Australia's 1st online Black Soldier Fly Farming (BSF) course! Based on 10 years collective Australian BSF farming experience: designed to be suitable for beginners and backyard set-ups, all the way through to commercial production.
The course is available as a self-paced Digital Download, or you can enrol in a 6-week Facilitated online program with a small co-hort of learners from across Australia and hopefully the world! The latter option includes weekly group mentoring sessions and access to our WhatsApp community.
