This sweet wee man is Bean, a puppy who should be running around playing, exploring and being loved but instead he's lucky to be alive. ❤️
Late on Monday afternoon, I received a call about a puppy who was injured. He had reportedly 'gotten hurt' on the weekend and was limping.
His owners transported him from a town in the Wheatbelt to meet me in Northam and the moment I laid eyes on him it was clear that he was in serious pain.
The slightest movement of his back end caused him to cry out in pain, a look of absolute anguish on his precious little face.
It is believed that he was running across a road and was hit by a car.
At only a couple of kilos in bodyweight, he's incredibly lucky his injuries weren't fatal.
On top of the immediate issue of his injuries, Bean was also found to be severely infested with fleas, so many that a vet later observed that she hadn't seen so many live adult fleas on any animal in over a decade!
This kind of parasite burden leaves a puppy anaemic and weak at the best of times.
With huge thanks to wonderful volunteer Jess (and her amazing kids) we got Bean straight over to York to be seen by the team at Heartlands.
It was after closing time by this point but they jumped in and gave him lots of pain relief before evaluating his hind legs.
A green stick fracture was easily palpable but there were concerns of much more going on, with a fear that his pelvis may have been broken. 😱
He was kept comfortable overnight until he could be x-rayed on Tuesday morning and while a serious femur fracture is never a good thing, there was immense relief when the radiographs showed that his pelvis was intact.
As you can see in the xrays, at the top of his right femur there are multiple breaks, a terrible shattering injury.
His x-rays were assessed by the specialist team at WAVES who have recommended that given his young age and the nature of the breaks, surgery is not the best option right now - we just wait for his little body to do what it needs to do and heal!
So, our little man requires extremely strict crate confinement. He will need to be kept in a playpen/crate for a minimum of two weeks, with trips out to the toilet (and for cuddles of course!) but no running around or jumping at all.
Now here's where we need you in TWO ways!
1. Foster home 🏡
Are you someone who is at home the majority of the time and can care for Bean?
You'll need to keep him contained in a crate or pen (we will supply) and take him out for regular toilet trips. He is on twice daily oral medication and may need a couple of vet visits to have his topical pain patch replaced. (We can do this at another vet if Heartlands isn't local to you).
2. Donations to pay his bill! 💸 Money sadly does not grow on trees and whilst Bean himself is a bit of a miracle, he didn't come with any magic beans 🫘 🪙 or gold coins!
His stay at Heartlands for the past 3 days has now reached just over $1,900 🫣😱
We don't know exactly what his ongoing costs will be so we need all the help we can get.
