At Wiener Crew Rescue we want pets to stay with their owners! We would welcome the day that we said there are no dogs to rescue. ❤️

Day 3 of 10 of dachshund specific diseases

☀️ MORNING EDUCATION: DENTAL DISEASE

Good morning 🤎 let’s talk about something often overlooked: dental disease in small breeds like dachshunds.

Because their mouths are small and teeth are tightly packed, plaque builds up quickly. Without care, this can lead to gum disease, tooth loss, and even affect heart health over time.

Early signs include:
• Bad breath
• Yellow/brown tartar
• Red or bleeding gums
• Difficulty chewing

Prevention is simple but powerful:
✔️ Regular tooth brushing
✔️ Dental chews (vet-approved)
✔️ Routine dental checks

A healthy mouth = a healthier dog overall 🐶

$4289.70 that's our outstanding vet bill at the moment.

All rescues are stuggling and we have had three surrenders this week normally we have one to two per week so thats more dogs to the vet for check ups, vaccination, desexing and possibly more

Joan and the team cant keep up with all the behind the scenes work either. New adoption and foster carer co-ordinators have come on board however they need support to get up and running.

Paperwork is literally endless - adoption forms, foster carer forms, change of owner.

Then logistics of transporting dogs, purchasing essentials for new dogs who are going into foster care.

Its a huge job and takes alot of time and money to keep the wheels turning.

If you could spare a few dollars to help relieve the pressure we would truly appreciate it.

Day 2 of 10 of dachshund specific diseases ☀️ MORNING EDUCATION: OBESITY & SPINAL STRAIN

Good morning 🤎 today’s reminder is simple but important: weight matters more than we think in dachshunds.

Because of their long spine, even a small amount of excess weight creates extra pressure on their back and joints.

Over time, this can:
• Increase IVDD risk
• Reduce mobility
• Shorten lifespan quality

A healthy dachshund is not about being “small”—it’s about being fit and functional.

Healthy signs include:
✔️ Waist visible from above
✔️ Tummy tuck from the side
✔️ Ribs easy to feel

It’s one of the most powerful ways we can protect them daily 🐾

Day 1 of of 10 specific dachshund specific diseases ☀️ MORNING EDUCATION: IVDD (Spinal Disease in Dachshunds)
Good morning 🤎 let’s talk about one of the most important dachshund health conditions: IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease).

Dachshunds are uniquely shaped dogs with long spines and short legs. This structure makes them more vulnerable to disc degeneration over time.

When discs weaken or slip, they can press on the spinal cord—causing pain, weakness, or in severe cases, loss of mobility.

What increases risk:
• Jumping on/off furniture
• Excess body weight
• Repetitive strain on the back

What helps protect them:
✔️ Ramps instead of jumping
✔️ Careful lifting (support chest + back)
✔️ Maintaining a lean body condition
✔️ Avoiding rough impact play

IVDD isn’t always preventable—but many cases are manageable or reduced with simple daily care 🐾
