🚨NSW CAT OWNERS, RESCUERS & VETS

From 5 November 2026, major changes to NSW medicines laws come into effect including changes affecting how veterinary practices can obtain compounded medicines for urgent use stock.

Under the new rules, veterinary practitioners obtaining scheduled medicines from pharmacies for urgent use will generally be restricted to products that are ARTG registered, APVMA registered, or manufactured under an APVMA permit.

⚠️ THIS MATTERS FOR VETERINARY EMERGENCY CARE.

Compounded medicines can be needed when an appropriate registered strength, formulation or product isn’t available.

There is an important exception NSW Health states that pharmacists may supply unregistered goods, including compounded medicines, to veterinary practitioners for urgent use where the pharmacist holds the required APVMA permit.

Vets will also still be able to prescribe a compounded medicine for an individual animal and have that prescription dispensed by a compounding pharmacy.

But these changes could still affect how readily veterinary practices can keep particular compounded medicines available before an emergency walks through the door.

For rescuers like me caring for cats with complex and critical medical needs, access to emergency medication matters. When an animal deteriorates quickly, we don’t want unnecessary barriers standing between that animal and the treatment their veterinarian determines they need.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) was once considered an almost universally fatal diagnosis — but advances in treatment have completely changed the outlook for many cats.

FIP Cats Australia works to provide education, awareness and support for cat owners navigating an FIP diagnosis, and they’ll be joining us on the day to share their knowledge with our community.

🎤 INFORMATION TALK — WHAT IS FIP?

Throughout the day, FIP Cats Australia will also be presenting an informative talk covering what FIP is, signs cat owners should be aware of, and how treatment options have changed.

Whether you’re a cat owner, foster carer, rescue volunteer or simply want to learn more, this is a fantastic opportunity to better understand a disease that many people still know very little about.
