That little twitch when you run your hand over your horse’s back can be a sign that the area is sensitive and may be associated with muscle tension or restrictions in the surrounding tissues.

Before treating, I always take the time to assess the horse as a whole and palpate the surrounding muscles and tissues to determine the most appropriate treatment approach for that individual horse.

Here, we used laser therapy, manual therapy and targeted stretching to work on the surrounding tissues and encourage relaxation and mobility.

As you can see in the video, there is a noticeable change in the muscle tone and response to palpation after treatment. 🤍

What often looks like “affection” in horses is usually a shift in autonomic state.

I’ve had the honour of treating Zarah Turiya Farms for around a year now, and she’s not always been like this. Over time, as she’s learnt to relax, regulate, and trust the process, her behaviour during treatment has changed noticeably.

She originally presented with significant tension through the back and reduced ease through the thoracic sling. As we progressed with gentle soft tissue work, her posture started to shift, and so did her behaviour, with her now actively seeking contact and softening through the body.

In clinical terms, this is often a transition towards parasympathetic dominance and reduced protective guarding.

In simple terms, it means the horse is shifting out of a stress/protection state and into a calmer, more regulated state where the body can actually let go of tension.
