Cover girl does it again !! Marionvale Di won the Perth and Avon Open three sheep championship following her win last year at the State championship on the same ground. The tricky white tag merinos proved very challenging particularly at the bridge but Di managed to handle them and pen in her two runs to take out the final. Di’s daughter Marionvale Shadow placed third in the improver handled by Paul McArdle and her grandaughter my Olboa Gin placed 4th in the improver. We had three in the final with Marionvale Woody placing 7th and Marionvale Kipper 13th.

Marionvale Seven. We were lucky enough to get one last mating out of Marionvale Lad to Olboa Gin before he left us. Lad is Marionvale Di’s sire and Gin is her grandaughter. Seven is now six months old and showing some very nice natural work. Her concentration, footwork, distance off the sheep and willingness to come in are nice to see. She finds balance and pauses to think and scan the group. She is calm on her sheep but has a turn of pace if required to cover a break.

These couple of trial dogs pulled this mob out of some really rough country in the hills in Beverley. Di and Woody went bush to pick up the small groups and bring them together then move them over to the laneway ready for the trial on Thursday. Difficult rocky hills with some serious cliff drops and sheep that know how to run and hide. The dogs were amazing being sent blind into the thick bush to pick up the small groups and join them. Searching the rocky bush and coming back with sheep on every send.

Olboa Gin took offence at the challenges on her by the sheep at the Pingelly trial and took matters into her own hands. The judges didnt like it and fired me.
Confrontations and stand offs will occur in trials and it’s important to help the dog work through it without over doing it. Here I’m recreating a stand off and asking Gin to walk in and occasionally give little flanks to build her confidence and add to her skill level. She can hit the sheep provided she doesn’t hold on. I keep placing her on the nose of the sheep so she doesnt avoid the confrontation and cheek or body bite like a cheap shot.
I encourage her to keep moving forward with some authority rather than too much caution that can draw the sheep. The right sheep makes it a successful exercise.

First trial since I returned from the east at Pingelly. Twistie Gin Pete Woody Kipper and Di all had good runs in the Open and Gin in the improver. Di Woody and Kipper made the top 12 open final with Di finishing 3rd after posting the top score in the first round of 89 and drawing three psycho in the final and Woody placing 4th the top scoring kelpie again. Challenging young merinos who stood up to the dogs made it a tough trial but every dog bar Gin, who was a bit unlucky, managed a pen. Photos by Jess King and Simon Wallace.
