Shane Nichols and Hayden Black are heading into spring with an exciting young team, led by promising new season 3-year-olds, emerging 2-year-olds that are slowly building and established mares ready to build on encouraging recent form.

For Nichols and Black, there is plenty to like about a team that finished last season with several promising 2-year-olds, now 3-year-olds showing promise and up-side. Nichols spoke to The Thoroughbred Report about how the team is lining up ahead of an exciting spring.

Meet the team! 🧲

Thank you to Aushorse and the Melbourne Racing Club for putting on the MRC Preview Day at the Mornington Racecourse on Sunday. It was a great turnout and we were pleased to showcase some of the two-year-olds we have remaining available.

We were able to breeze five horses up the straight on the course proper and then parade a further three juveniles in the mounting yard.

A big thank you also goes to the people who came along and enjoyed the day. It was great to see some familiar faces and have some new ones join our stable. It couldn’t be done without the wonderful team we have at SNR, who gave up their Sunday to have the horses looking great.

Tiger Fox led from pillar to post at Bendigo today under a brilliant Jackie Beriman ride for a dominant win in the 1600m Maiden. The three-year-old has been racing really well of late and just hasn’t had things go his way, but he stepped up today and won well.

Well done to the ownership group who are a great bunch of people, headed by Club Sport Syndications who are great supporters of the stable. Tiger Fox was a $20,000 Magic Millions Adelaide purchase by SNR and he is well in front of that now. He was secured from Penfold Thoroughbreds who present their yearlings beautifully at the sales.

Jackie Beriman has been having a good run of form with the stable and was rapt with the performance of the son of Tiger Of Malay today.

“He jumped really good, got across easy, and just kept travelling. At the 600m I just picked him up a little and he responded. He was strong at the mile and appreciated being back on the turf with a bit of give in the ground.

Well done to all involved and out team at Mornington.

Blondie’s Award scores the first win of the new season with a dominant display over 1000m with Jye McNeil in the saddle on the Ballarat Synthetic today. It’s back-to-back victories for the now four-year-old mare who is having an excellent prep for Owner-Breeder Carol O’Shea’s Innisfree Thoroughbreds.

The Shamus Award mare hasn’t been outside the top four in six runs at the 1000m this prep and we’ll look to keep her fresh and look for another suitable race for her.

Well done to our team at Mornington who really enjoy these winners through the winter months when the mornings are that little bit tougher.

Designer Style closes out the season a winner, and an impressive one at that! Jackie Beriman gave the filly a great ride and is building a nice rapport with the stable. It was just Designer Style’s second career start, setting her up nicely for the spring and into her four-year-old year.

Well done to Owner-Breeder Michael Birchall and Rod Miller who both raced Group 3 winner and half-sister to this filly Brazen Style with us. It’s a great pedigree page, being out of the Group 1-winning mare In Style, who is proving her worth at stud.

The win at Wangaratta was one of two on the day for Newgate resident Capitalist, who nosed out Zoustar to claim the Champion Sire by Winners Title. Both stallions were locked on 169 winners for the season heading into the last day.

Extreme Warrior has really started to fire as he closes out his first crop of runners. He has sired four winners from just nine runners, including the promising Listed winner Eternal Warrior.

Our Extreme Warrior x Come On Over c**t is completing his breaking process and has handled the early stages well. He's a healthy young c**t that has been enjoying his work.

Our c**t was purchased at the Inglis Premier Sale for $60,000 from the Collingrove Stud draft and opportunities are available to race with us. Get in touch to find out more.

Blondie’s Award strikes again with another win this prep and proving she loves racing at the 1000m when fresh. Zac Spain gave her an excellent ride and was full of praise for the Shamus Award filly once she balanced up in the straight, she was full of running.

She’s been so consistent this campaign when running over the short course with two wins and two placings from her five starts over the five furlongs this time in.

Well done to Carol O’Shea and her Innisfree Thoroughbreds who have been having a good run of late. We’re looking forward to a few celebration beers together!
