What do we look for during a canine gait analysis? 🐾👇
Understanding how a dog moves is critical. While obvious injuries are easy to spot, dogs often use subtle compensatory mechanisms to hide discomfort—which can ultimately cause secondary muscle pain and stiffness in the back and other areas.

When evaluating a dog’s gait, we closely analyse:
* Hip hiking (uneven pelvic movement)
* Stride length (how far they step)
* Flexion & extension (how well their joints bend and straighten)

Tyger is the perfect example. The videos from March show an old racing injury causing him to walk with a shortened stride, hip hitching, and minimal knee flexion.

Look at him now! After just 6 weeks of a customised exercise, mobility, and massage program, his movement has completely transformed.

Focus on the “hidden” heroes of your dog’s health: Stabiliser Muscles! 🐾

While we often focus on the big muscles we can see, it’s the deep stabilisers close to the joints that do the heavy lifting for injury prevention and lifelong mobility.

Why they matter: These muscles act like an internal support system, keeping joints secure and the spine stable during every jump, turn, and walk.

How to train them: Static Balance is the key! By having your dog stand on uneven surfaces (like a foam pad or balance disc), you encourage “micro-shifts” in their centre of gravity. These tiny postural adjustments wake up those deep stabilisers and sharpen their coordination.

Meet Lenny, my first greyhound! 🐾

At 5 months old, Lenny was diagnosed with an angular limb deformity. This caused his leg to turn out, leading to lameness, chronic muscle soreness, and those dreaded greyhound corns.

Since I was finishing my Exercise Physiology degree, I decided to put my studies to the test. I built Lenny a custom rehab program focusing on:
* Targeted strengthening of the supporting muscles.
* Gait correction to fix compensatory patterns.
* Massage therapy to reduce stiffness.

Fast forward 1.5 years: Lenny is officially corn-free, lameness-free, and moving better than ever! ✨
Seeing his transformation inspired me to dive deeper into canine rehabilitation. I’m so excited to use what I’ve learned to help more dogs like Lenny live their best, pain-free lives. 🐕💨
