d competitor of GRC Dog sports (Gameness, Relationship & Control). My own dog Gus has his SR1 (Social Responsibility Level 1) Title and has points towards his Mill Race L1 Title. GRC dog sports channels the dogs, genetic drives, motivations and potential into constructive activities like Slat Mill Races (self propelling tread mills for dogs), Spring Pole, Wall climb and Weight pull, whilst teaching the dog to control that drive in the real world. On the weekend we attempted level one of the obedience and jumps (OBJ) in Mondioring.

Whilst we did not pass (I had a little expectation to pass us to be honest) ;Gus was a super star!

He did really really well at the things that I didn’t think he would do well at and he did s**t at the things. I thought he would do well at, which is dog sports life basically, but I couldn’t be happier with that attempt, for our very first time in a new sport that is very intimidating, with an off breed at a Malinois sport and in front of an international judge!

The absolute best boy.

No words can describe the love I have for this silly animal.

This boy was very challenging when he was young. Severe dog reactivity, aggression, prey drive, leash pulling, antisocial behaviour… basically a big orange pest.

The best thing we ever did was explore dog sports, in particular GRC. It has made me a better human, a better trainer, a clearer communicator, a better coach, a cheer leader, not just for him, even when he gets things wrong, but for my community of like minded dog guardians.

Back in Feb I had the privilege of learning from one of the best in the Biz. Dr Melanie Uhde.

Seminars are a fantastic way to learn new techniques and perspectives. This particular seminar was definitely not like the others. Dr Melanie Uhde walked us through the processes the brain goes through when our dogs a learning. Whether it’s purposeful learning like when we teach behaviours or when dogs learn from instinct and natural occurrences in the environment.

If you’re into dogs, training, biology or anything to do with learning theory you should be following . Dr Melanie breaks the science we don’t understand and explains it so we do.

I know this is late, but I think about this seminar and what I learnt a lot and consider how I train my dog and others.

I just spent the weekend in Vic watching these legends present a ‘Dealing with difficult dogs’ seminar.
I came away with more knowledge, inspiration, ideas, questions (not in a bad way), reassurance, and confidence.
Josh, and Alex have a great way of explaining things that is easy to understand, their friendship is hilarious.
