โš ๏ธFernvale's Habitat Destruction โ€” Brouff Rd๐Ÿจ

Thank you to Marina for taking the time to report on this issue and helping bring attention to the ongoing destruction of critical wildlife habitat in Fernvale.

These proposals are unacceptable.
If you haven't already, please submit your objections to council โ€” templates have been provided in the comments for your convenience.

As James has shared in local community groups, several koalas have been sighted recently along the edge of these cleared blocks. These sightings represent only a small number of the koalas that call this area home. Cooper and Nixon, two boys we've personally rescued and released, live here too.

This is the last remaining safe haven for wildlife in this area. The destruction of this habitat will result in the displacement, injury, and death of the animals that depend on it.

It's not too late to save this land. ๐Ÿจโค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน๐ŸŒฟ

Waltzing Matilda ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ’œ

On the 8th of May, after non-stop early rises for work, family, and many, many 'bears', we'd finally found ourselves with a totally free day and had allowed ourselves a sleep-in.

The universe obviously didn't get that memo because โ€” right on 6am โ€” we received a call for a koala hit by a car in Ebenezer.

No matter how tired you are, as a rescuer, nothing gets you up faster.

Our callers had come across this sad beautiful girl on the side of the road as they were making their way to work. I was able to advise them how to safely contain her and get her into their car until we could meet them and transport her into care at RSPCA.

At first glance, we were hopeful she'd perhaps avoided being struck and that it was simply a horrible case of conjunctivitisโ€” as we've had koalas with bleeding eyes in the past.

But on closer inspection, we could see that wasn't the case. Matilda had sustained significant trauma.

On intake, she was found to have severe conjunctivitis, a fractured finger, a wound beneath her chin, abdominal trauma, and complications to her palate. Sadly, within her pouch was also a tiny deceased joey, lost as a result of the impact. Matilda herself is estimated to be only four years old โ€” not much more than a baby herself.

Despite all of this, our sweet girl has survived and is currently on the ward at RSPCA. The team have been working tirelessly to save this special girl. ๐Ÿ’

She has such an adorable and unique personality, and has recently shown quite a fondness for gum blossom โ€” which is fantastic!

RSPCA have some of the best leaf cutters going around, but blossom can be difficult to source.

During our many rescues throughout the Ipswich region and Scenic Rim, we've been lucky enough to find many large gum trees with low hanging leaf. In an effort to help out, we've done our best to drop off extra blossom when we can for everyone in care (but mostly for Tilly ๐Ÿคซ).

She is an absolute fighter, with so many people rooting for her. All we can hope is that she continues to improve and keeps munching away on all her buckets of leaf. ๐ŸŒฟ

Thank you to our callers for stopping and getting her the help she needed. As well as to the team at Wacol for your constant dedication to our wildlife.

Matilda is in the best possible hands.

Hang in there, baby.
Your trees are waiting for you. ๐Ÿจโค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

A man of many names... ๐Ÿจโค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

On the 29th of April, after another day out searching for old loverboy Walter, we came across this little cutie in a poor excuse for a gum tree.

Memphis, as we later named him, appeared in rather poor condition with a dirty bum.

His tree, though small and perfect for flagging thanks to its lack of obstacles โ€” true to our luck โ€” was growing out the side of a steep embankment.

It successfully turned an 7m-high tree into a 13m on a 30ยฐ lean.

The three of us took up what positions we could.

Trudi was to the side/top to stop him reaching a nearby spotted gum and to encourage him down the trunk. I was at the back of the tree with the trunk he'd climb down below me. Karen was below the tree with another pole to keep him steady โ€” it was very much a game of 3D chess.

Since that was obviously too easy, we were working in the dark as well.

Everything went smoothly, including my final, unintentional slide off the cliff โ€” with Memphis tucked up in a towel on my lap like E.T.

All's well that ends well. We had our boy safely loaded up and off to Wacol. ๐Ÿš‘

Sadly, Memphis recorded a low body score of just 3/10, but successfully made it onto the ward for treatment. โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน

The following day, as we received the hopeful news on Memphis, we were also sent some baby photos by Trudi. As it turns out, our boy is actually Flit โ€” Kida's big brother!

Flit dispersed from his gorgeous mumma, Sadie, in 2021 during a time of torrential weather and hadn't been seen since. With fears for his health, we couldn't be happier to hear that this gorgeous boy has been found.

If Flit and Memphis weren't enough names, thanks to his little buck teef, he's also affectionately referred to as Ratboy by... everyone. ๐Ÿ˜‚

Thank you to the vet team at RSPCA and Moggill for your time and care for our kids. ๐Ÿจโœจ๏ธ

We'll have you home soon, buddy. ๐Ÿ’

Don't blink โ€” you'll miss it ๐Ÿ‘€

I feel it's worth mentioning that this video is not sped up at all. What you're seeing here is raw, unbridled koala power. ๐ŸŽ

Powered by eucalyptus and pure fury, our little Asha put the pedal to the metal on the 13th of May โ€” her day to finally go home. ๐Ÿ

We caught Ash on the 23rd of February after a tedious few days of failed rescue attempts, and at the tail end of the most unprecedentedly difficult 11 days in our brief rescue history.

This little ray of sunshine (and I do use that phrase sarcastically) successfully made it onto the ward at RSPCA for treatment of cystitis.

Asha was still classified as a sub-adult at the time of rescue โ€” being not yet three years old. Despite her small size and only recently becoming independent, she was as mean as they come.

If she wasn't trying to bite us, she was attacking the towels. If it wasn't the towels, it was her emotional support bolster... the girl's got issues.

We had great fears for her, especially given how long her rehabilitation took. We couldn't have been more thrilled when we got the call that she was finally ready for release.

She looked about as happy as I think is possible for her to be. There was no abuse towards her support bolster this time โ€” just a RBF that could nearly rival my own.

We knew she was keen to go, but nothing prepared us for just how fast she was up and out of her carry cage. There are no post-release photos at the end of this video because I simply didn't have time to get them. ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ’จ

This video still makes me laugh. I haven't seen a koala move so fast. ๐Ÿ˜‚

We're so happy she's home and has the chance to live the long, healthy life that every koala deserves.

Stay safe and angry, Asha. ๐Ÿ’

Miss Independent โ€” home again. ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿก

On the 8th of April, we came across this beautiful girl with a bad infection in one of her eyes.

After intake at the RSPCA Wildlife Hospital, Keira was admitted for treatment of conjunctivitis, as well as a wound on her chin that required stitches.

She absolutely hated being in care and made sure every vet, nurse, and volunteer knew it. But it saved her life, so... letโ€™s pretend thereโ€™s some small part of her thatโ€™s grateful for being rescued.

After one full month, on the 8th of May, our cranky little girl was finally cleared for release, so we got to bring her home. โœจ๏ธ

We chose a lovely blue gum for her release tree. After clearing away the surrounding weeds, dead branches from the lower trunk, and some loose bark to make her climb easier, Keira shot out and around the back of the tree, completely disregarding the easy path weโ€™d made for her.

She then stopped mid-climb, having apparently deemed her release tree inadequate, and stared us down until we left.

Really felt the love that afternoon. ๐Ÿซฅ

Oh well, weโ€™re happy sheโ€™s home โ€” and we know she is too โ€” so thatโ€™s all that matters.

Stay healthy and safe, Keira! ๐Ÿ’œ

Flashback Friday! ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ“ธ

I recently went deep diving through my old SD card. Out of curiosity, I wanted to see how many of our kids we'd come across before we became rescuers.

I was quite surprised to see how many koalas we "hadn't seen before" until their rescue, we actually had!

I was also amazed by how many random koalas Iโ€™d photographed over the years that weโ€™ve never seen again. But it was fun revisiting old memories regardless.

I transferred a couple of my favourites, along with some now-familiar faces. Figured Friday was the perfect time to share a few of them. ๐Ÿจ๐Ÿ’

๐Ÿšจ FERNVALE HABITAT DESTRUCTION ๐Ÿšจ

Calling all residents! ๐Ÿ—ฃ๐Ÿ“ฃ

One of the last remaining areas of habitat in our town is now in the firing line for total destruction!

2 separate proposals, 155 housing lot expansion.

This bushland is home to koalas, phascogales, gliders, and countless other native species that cannot survive further clearing and fragmentation.

This is not only devastating to our local ecology, but also damaging to our town, which does not have the necessary infrastructure to support such an expansion.

Once these mature ecosystems are destroyed, they are gone forever. No amount of new planting will compensate for the loss.

For the โ€œlucky onesโ€ that survive the initial trauma and displacement, they will be left to navigate increased traffic, attacks from domestic animals, and disease as a result of severe stress.

This development means the local extinction of our unique and beautiful wildlife.

Please speak up. Lodge your objections. Help protect what little habitat we have left before itโ€™s wiped out completely! ๐Ÿจโค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน๐ŸŒฟ
