What does it feel like to grow up learning how to cultivate, germinate, care for and harvest your own vegetables? I think the little managers face says it all. Having his grandma and gg here to teach him is yet another amazing step. What a crop so far this year.

Lots of late nights ahead as we build the taj mahal of chicken sheds. This will house up to approximately 60 chooks with a large outdoor run. Over time as our farm grows so too will our flock with the plan to become a sustainable free range egg farm here in Darwin along with our other enterprises. This year is marked as our year to build and develop. Time is short during the day so thankfully alex doesn’t mind the night shift. Few more nights and it will be ready to clad and be slid to its new place ready for the next batch of laying hens to arrive at the end of the week.

Angry is an understatement.

Warning graphic photo below!

Our dogs aren’t perfect and nor is our fences we have issues and where an animal can find a weakness in the fence they will exploit it but this, this boils my blood.

Our beautiful little ram who was hand raised from 2 days old has been attacked. If it wasn’t for our amazing teddy and 2 buffalo he would most certainly not have survived.

Feral dogs in our area is getting out of control.

Let this be a warning we will show no mercy to dogs on our property as we would expect from other livestock owners if our dogs escaped.

This is the third animal that has been attacked by dogs on our property since we have been here. Thankfully he is still alive and our amazing Dr Suzannah smith from Darwin large animal vets is on her way to do everything she can to keep him alive and help him recover from this.

$4000 we really didn’t have has now been spent building our livestock a safe night paddock closer to the house for us to use whatever means needed to protect our precious herd!

Well all happening on farm. An abundance of veggies in courtesy of grandma and GG the vast majority have been germinated from seed stock saved by grandma last year.

A lot of trial crops in in preparation for growing larger quantities next year.

We are also doing some tyre planting with old tyres we have on farm. Trialling the benefits of painting the tyres vs leaving them as is.

This absolutely would not have been possible without the amazing hard work and dedication of Grandma and GG from GOLD cottage. Their enthusiasm and interest in crop development and growth as well as their experience is unrivalled.

Today we processed down 3 of our pigs. It was a whole family affair. Grandma and GG kept our fire going under the scalding units and helped with the kids.

Eli and Oskar ensured everything went smoothly….. well almost smoothly. Eli ensured to thank every animal for their contribution.

Alex and Lachy our butcher did the manual labor and gerrymandering played nurse as well as ensuring we had perfect mince.

A massive thank you again to Lachlan Hill for his expertise and energy to help us get through the animals in 10 hours from start to finish.

A huge thanks to Top End Coolrooms for the last minute hire of their weapon of a unit. Our animals were bone out ready in only 3 hours in their freezer unit.

Safe to say Alex is feeling a little sore tonight but this is living!

Happy Saturday here on the farm.

Well we have been quiet on this page for awhile. Things got extra busy last year and getting by each day is what mattered. Last year we got to welcome Lisa and Gwen from GOLD cottage up here to stay. (Hopefully your house is built soon NT time strikes again.)
We welcomed chewy and banjo to our little herd.
Our little farm manager has graduated preschool and went off to big school.
This year is off to a steady start. Finally getting rain. Moving on some livestock for processing. We said farewell to our beautiful Rosie (or as alex says mongrel fence jumper) and tomorrow we say goodbye to 3 more pigs. Alex has been busy recycling materials already on farm building a scalding tank and table.

With any luck this page will become more active again this year as we continue to develop and upgrade our farm!
