We canโ€™t recommend these products more highly. Personally my ferrets have a big sprinkle of probiotic powder on their food every meal - their coats are beautiful - and while my adrenal girl still shows some obvious signs her coat, energy and overall health is very good. Salmon oil is often added to meals and always used for nail cutting day. Try them out!

FOA would like to welcome our newest members and especially to those that are looking to be first time ferret parents.
This post is in an attempt to cram in all of the basics you need to know prior to making the final decision to have your whole household and life turned upside down and all of your treasures moved further out of reach than you would think or broken. (We can assure you that pot plants do not stand a chance or your lounge suite for that matter)!

So letโ€™s start with the best place to find your new love/terrorist.
The best advice we can give to someone that has never had a ferret family member, DO NOT purchase a kit.
There are 100โ€™s of ferrets sitting in rescues all across the country just looking for their perfect home through no fault of their own. We often hear โ€˜I donโ€™t want to take on someone elseโ€™s problemโ€™ 99% of the time these little guys find themselves in a rescue due to the person that purchased them in the first place being the problem, lack of research is what makes ferrets one of the most abandoned/surrendered pet in Australia.
Ferret breeding is prolific in Australia, so many backyard breeders looking to make a quick buck without proper care shown to mum prior, during and after birth. This plays a huge role in people being left with massive vet bills and worse, broken hearts when their baby becomes unwell or dies.
Next we need to understand the costs involved.
Letโ€™s say you do purchase a kit off gumtree or the like for $50. You then need to take into account desexing within the first 12 months.
Male ferrets come in rut around August/September and stink, if they are not desexed they need to be separated from any other ferrets until April the following year as they become aggressive and will kill others.
Females on the other hand will come in season around the same time and if not desexed or mated run the very real risk of dying, this is why we see so many unwanted kits due to people not taking into consideration desexing costs.
On average, desexing will cost between $250 and $450, most often girls are more expensive.
If you have decided to bring home a kit, you will need to be very vigilant for the most come issue we see in young ferrets, rickets.
Rickets is extremely common and is wholly due to the breeders poor choice and lack of proper care of mum and no bother given to research prior to deciding to breed.
Always question the breeder on diet, you are looking for a high calcium intake.
Continuing on cost, other than the day to day feeding costs, ferrets are extremely complicated creatures and can have many health issues, you really do need to have access to funds for emergency vet costs.
Nip training is the other thing that sees these guys end up at a rescue within months of being added to the family.

Ferrets are NOT a cuddly pet.

Ferrets do bite and if you have seen a set of their teeth you will know they are not there for show!

Teaching a ferret not to bite is no different to teaching a pup, it takes time and patience.
Do not smack, scruff of flick the nose of a biting ferret, this can and will make the situation worse. A firm no and put them in a pet carrier for 5 minutes before trying again.
Ferrets are highly intelligent and will quickly workout that their behaviour is unacceptable and hate being ignored.

This really is just a small insight and we encourage all members to feel happy and comfortable to ask any questions within the group.

Ferret Owners Australia Inc. (FOA) was born from 2 crazy ladies in little ole Tassie having a vision, whilst our knowledge and understanding of how others see ferrets has been a learning experience and sometimes challenging, the vision has stayed the same.
It is all about the ferrets and we want to see nothing more than ferrets creating mischief and mayhem.

All questions should be asked with the confidence that no judgment is made.

Happy Dooking๐Ÿ’ซ

Pic is kits that came into FOA care at 4 weeks of age, bred for a buck and all 8 have health issues that FOA pay a price for, ultimately these little guys pay the price with their life and us left behind with broken hearts once again.

FOA is devastated to hear the news of Robert Johnsonโ€™s passing overnight.
Rob was a true legend of the ferret world, not only in Australia, his knowledge and compassion was felt around the world.
Many decades of Robโ€™s life were dedicated to rescuing and educating to better not only the lives of ferrets but those that chose to keep them.
At one time Rob had 33 ferrets in his care, worked full time and was still there for his family.

On the 20th October 2021 Robโ€™s heart broke into a million pieces when his beloved cuddle buddy Mr Meeks passed away. Whilst Rob had taken in so many ferrets over the years, Meeko was truly that special one.

Prior to Meekoโ€™s passing Rob had made the difficult decision that he could no longer take in anymore as his heart just couldnโ€™t take another goodbye.

Elora and Bambi were the last two ferrets to share in Robโ€™s life and love, with his last heartache felt with Bambi passing in her daddies arms June 2022.

Ferret Owners Australia was established 4 years ago and we very quickly realised for true success we required the exceptionally kind hearted, extremely knowledgeable Robert Johnson to be part of the team.
Rob loved the concept of a non-judgmental group where it was a safe place to ask questions and he has been a huge part of ensuring this came to fruition along with passing on every piece of his knowledge that he possibly could.

The time has come for us to say goodbye our friend.

I know that Rob would have been overwhelmed by the number of ferrets that were there to greet him last night, those that had been in his care and the 1000โ€™s that have him to thank for the lives that they knew.

Mr Meeks is now safely back in dadโ€™s arms and Rob is back sniffing ferrets again.

It is with a broken heart that we thank his beautiful family for sharing Robert with our community, the picture is one that was Robertโ€™s favourites and this is what he had to say about it.

โ€˜When I pass away I want this photo next to my urn, they brought so much happiness to my life, miss them all so much.โ€™

You our dear friend have earned your wings, fly high and free.

*Please take the time to make a comment on how Robert touched your life. We will invite Robโ€™s daughter Charlii to read the true impact that her beloved dad had on the ferret world.

Every rescues worst nightmare is about to begin.
BREEDING SEASON.
Please think before you breed.

19/08/2024

As a founder of FOA Iโ€™m saddened by what has happened and the comments made when one of our members asked for some advice with their hob that has come in rut.
This goes against every part of the vision that was had of a non-judgmental group that offers advice and help to all members.

What has really got me though is the fact that if this member did nothing their ferret would be just fine, having a male in rut is not hurting him in anyway, he maybe a little uncomfortable but for the main part he would be more annoying and smelly to the humans.
This poor member has been attacked for doing absolutely nothing wrong.
What is the difference to having a vassy hob?!
This member is not wanting to surrender their ferret and from the original post I cannot see any intention to breed, therefore not having any impact on any rescue.

To the member that asked for advice, admin can only apologise for the experience that you have had in this group, FOA wish to extend the offer to pay for the desexing of your beloved boy.

And for anyone out there in the same boat wanting some advice in keeping the smell down with rutty malesโ€ฆ.
Sadly the boys release what they think is a beautiful perfume in the form of an oil, there really isnโ€™t much you can do to mask the smell, change bedding regularly and clean cage daily will help a little but not a lot.

HOME NEEDED - Western Sydney, near Camden

We are looking for a home for two ferrets, 5 and 6 years old. The owner wants to ensure itโ€™s the right home where theyโ€™ll live out their days. They do have a cage and accessories so no immediate costs however the female will need another Superlorein implant at some stage.

If you are interested please comment below and jump over to https://www.ferretownersaustralia.com/pages/adoption-form and complete the form we can pass into the owner.

He is moving in august so keen to get them settled soon.
