The Unsung Foundation of Every Great Boerboel

We often celebrate the powerful males of the breed, but every great Boerboel begins with a female.

A breeding program is not built on stud dogs alone. It is built on the quality, fertility, temperament, structure, maternal instinct, and consistency of the bi***es behind them. The womb that carries, nurtures, whelps, and raises the next generation is just as important—if not more important—than the sire.

These examples and observations from one of the foundation members of the SABT? Mr Kobus Rust serve as a reminder that true breeding success is about balance. A female should not simply be a smaller version of a male. Correct feminine expression, sound construction, functionality, fertility, milk production, maternal ability, and longevity all play a critical role in preserving the breed.

In an era where extreme size and exaggerated features often dominate attention, it is worth remembering that the Boerboel was developed as a practical, functional farm dog. The females were expected not only to look the part, but to reproduce, rear large healthy litters, and remain capable working companions.

As breeders, we should never lose sight of the importance of selecting and preserving exceptional female lines. Generations of quality are built through them.

What qualities do you value most in a Boerboel female?

Happy Friday Guys,

Sir: Piona Rampai
Dam: Piona Emma

Piona Lola, a distinguished South African Boerboel.

Craig Bloom narrates, During my visit to Africa, one particular dog left a lasting impression on me - Piona Rampai. Although I had initially come across his photo in the book "Gladiator Dogs" by Dr. Carl Semencic, witnessing him in person was truly awe-inspiring. Rampai is a lean, hard, tall, and agile Boerboel exuding an air of confidence and power that becomes apparent in his presence.

Having encountered an outstanding offspring of Rampai named Piona Klonkie, the 12th-ranked Boerboel globally in 1999, I harbored a strong desire to acquire him. Unfortunately, he was not available for purchase. Determined to maintain a connection with the bloodline, I opted for the next best option and acquired his litter sister, Lola.

Lola, a double-bred Dopper Oubass, inherits her lineage from a renowned producer of dogs with excellent hips. Her sire, Rampai, boasts 0:0 hips and is utilized across various states in the Republic of South Africa to enhance the hip status of dogs lacking strength in that area. Lola stands at an impressive 28 inches and weighs approximately 125lbs, making her a substantial presence.

Pregnancy Confirmed – Nova II x Kahlaas (RIP)

Today Ataraxia Nova II underwent ultrasound examination, and we are pleased to confirm that the breeding to Ataraxia Kahlaas (RIP) has been successful, with multiple puppies identified.

This litter represents a deliberate line-breeding strategy designed to preserve and reinforce proven Boerboel genetics. The pedigree combines the influence of several historically significant producers, including Ysterberg Sokket, Dandaloo Mack, Groenberg Rambo and Mouzer Adolf, through a structured breeding program focused on predictability, breed type, temperament and functionality.

Rather than pursuing genetic diversity for its own sake, this breeding was planned around the principle that carefully selected and proven bloodlines can be consolidated to maintain the characteristics that have made these dogs influential within the breed. The objective is to preserve strong bone, sound structure, stable temperament and authentic Boerboel character while maintaining the consistency that purposeful line breeding can provide.

Nova II herself combines both old and modern influences and carries the legacy of Bulters Timebadit through her sire line. Breeding her back to Kahlaas represents a return to foundation genetics that have demonstrated their value over multiple generations.

While there is still some time before whelping, confirmation of pregnancy is an encouraging milestone, and we look forward to monitoring Nova II's progress over the coming weeks.

TEMPERAMENT: THE FOUNDATION OF THE BOERBOEL

When discussing Boerboels, much attention is often given to size, substance, head type, and appraisal scores. While these characteristics are important, they should never overshadow the trait that truly defines the breed: temperament.

The Boerboel was developed as a functional farm dog and family guardian. Its value was not measured solely by physical power, but by its ability to assess situations calmly, remain loyal to its family, and respond appropriately when protection was genuinely required.

A correct Boerboel should possess confidence without unnecessary aggression, courage without recklessness, and a natural instinct to remain close to its owner. These behavioural traits are what historically distinguished the Boerboel from other large working breeds.

As breeders, we have a responsibility to preserve not only the phenotype of the breed but also the unique behavioural characteristics that made the Boerboel successful in its original role. A dog may possess exceptional structure and impressive physical attributes, but if temperament is compromised, the breed itself is compromised.

The future of the Boerboel depends on selection decisions that prioritise stable, reliable, and predictable temperament alongside sound structure and health.

What role do you believe temperament should play in modern Boerboel breeding programs?

Bloodlines are not created by accident.

Most breeders can produce a good dog. Far fewer can produce a family of dogs that consistently reproduce the same traits generation after generation.

Our latest article explores a structured breeding approach known as Rotational Family Breeding — a method built around preserving a strong maternal family while strategically rotating related sire lines back into the program over time.

The goal is not simply to create outstanding individuals, but to develop a recognisable bloodline with greater consistency in:

• Type
• Structure
• Temperament
• Functionality
• Predictability

This concept shares similarities with family-breeding systems historically used in livestock, horse, and working-dog programs, where the focus is long-term genetic development rather than short-term results.
