The award for most fascinating fishy father goes to... the mouth brooders! 👄

Did you know…

👄 A group of large-lipped male fish have adopted the strategy of using their mouth as a pram!

👄 By scooping their eggs up in their mouth, gobbleguts, cardinalfishes and jawfishes offer unique protection and transport to their brood.

👄 But there's a catch... no dinner for dad until the eggs hatch!

👄 These dads are patient though. They are known to let their newly hatched fry scoot back into their mouth, until they gain the strength and confidence to float free!

Have you seen one of these stunning purple shells along the shore this winter? 👀

They belong to violet sea snails! Did you know…

🐌 They are a predatory gastropod.

🐌 While land snails use their slime to slide, violet snails use theirs to float!

🐌 They hang upside down near the surface of the water and push their foot out, folding it to trap air inside. Then, it’s slime time!

🐌 By oozing slime, it forms strong bubbles that create a floating raft on the snail’s foot.

🐌 They can then ride the ocean currents like a wind-surfer, searching for their surface-dwelling prey; blue-bottles!
