In addition, shaping good behaviour, household manners, pulling on the lead, teaching your dog right from wrong, and building confidence within the canine and its handler. Our dogs aren’t perfect either.

They stuff up. They have bad days. They lose focus. They make poor decisions. They get overexcited, frustrated, distracted and sometimes act like they’ve forgotten everything we’ve ever taught them. 😂

Sometimes they ignore a command they’ve performed perfectly hundreds of times. Sometimes they react to something unexpected. Sometimes they become so distracted by the environment that their brain seems to completely switch off.

Especially working breeds.

They are intelligent, driven, energetic and constantly looking for something to do. That can be an incredible strength, but it also means they require ongoing guidance, structure and engagement. A working dog that is bored, overstimulated or undertrained can quickly become difficult to manage.

Owning and training a dog can be an emotional roller coaster — and professional dog trainers aren’t immune to it.

We get frustrated. We question ourselves. We have sessions that don’t go to plan. We experience setbacks, unexpected behaviours and days where our dogs seem to forget everything they know.

The difference isn’t that our dogs are perfect.

It’s that we stay consistent.

We’re constantly maintaining the behaviours we want, reinforcing the standards we’ve set and following through when our dogs get it wrong.

We don’t only train when things are going well. We don’t wait until a problem becomes serious before addressing it. We continue practising in different environments, around different distractions and under different levels of pressure.

Because a behaviour that works perfectly in your living room may fall apart at the park, on a busy footpath or around another dog.

Training doesn’t finish when your dog “knows” a command.

Knowing something and being able to perform it reliably in real life are two very different things. Dogs need repetition, reinforcement and clear communication. They need to understand that the same expectations apply whether they are calm at home or completely surrounded by distractions.

🏆 RECRUIT OF THE MONTH — WALTER 🏆

Walter’s journey is a great example of what can happen when training, structure and consistency all come together.

When Walter first came to us, he could be nervous and unsure, particularly around other dogs. He had a history of sporadic reactivity and was also dealing with separation anxiety, which had become more noticeable after the family’s older dog passed away.

Fast-forward to now, and Walter has come a long way.

Through his training and continued exposure at daycare, we’ve watched him become calmer, more confident and much better at regulating himself around other dogs. His behaviour has improved enormously, and he now absolutely thrives at daycare.

He listens well, understands what’s expected of him and has become a dog we can trust to make good choices in the daycare environment. Most importantly, he looks comfortable, settled and happy being there.

Walter is proof that a dog’s starting point doesn’t have to determine where they end up.

From nervous, reactive and struggling with separation ➡️ to calm, confident and absolutely smashing daycare.

Very well deserved, Walter. 👏🐾
