🤍 WHY DO RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS SOMETIMES LOOK FOR NEW HOMES FOR THEIR RETIRED CATS? 🤍
One of the most misunderstood decisions in responsible breeding is finding a new home for a beloved cat when they retire from breeding.
To someone looking from the outside, it might seem heartbreaking or even selfish. But sometimes, it is one of the kindest decisions a breeder can make. ❤️
Cats are social creatures, and although every cat is different, they naturally develop their own social structures, relationships and hierarchies within a group. In a multi-cat household, these dynamics can be particularly complex.
When a cat retires, their life changes.
They no longer have a role in the breeding programme, and sometimes their position within the group’s social hierarchy changes too.
Younger, more active cats mature, relationships shift, and a cat who once felt comfortable and confident in their familiar environment may begin to experience stress, tension or competition for space and resources.
Of course, this doesn’t happen in every cattery. Some retired cats are perfectly happy to remain with their familiar feline family for the rest of their lives. ❤️ But others may truly thrive in a quieter home, where they no longer need to share their favourite human, resting places or personal space with a large group of cats.
For some retired cats, this is an opportunity to discover a whole new chapter of life — one filled with comfort, security and undivided love.
Finding a new home for a retired cat will never be about getting rid of an animal who is no longer useful. It is all about recognising that their needs may have changed and asking ourselves what will make them happiest in the years ahead.
A responsible breeder’s duty does not end when a cat’s breeding career ends. If anything, this is when we must look even more closely at their individual needs, happiness and quality of life.
And when we make the difficult decision to let them go, it should never be about finding just any home. It should be about finding the right home — one that understands their character, respects their needs and loves them for who they are.
Because retirement is not the end of their story. It is the beginning of a new chapter. 🤍
Sometimes, the greatest gift we can give a cat is not keeping them close to us at all costs, but having the courage to choose the life that may make them happiest.
They may be retired from breeding, but they will never be retired from deserving love and those of you who know me know, this decision is always very emotional and personal to me 🐾❤️
