The coffin bone is suspended inside the hoof capsule

In my photo- the slice is taken medial to lateral.

The black layer at the top is the hoof wall. Beneath that is the inner hoof wall, with the fine white strands that are the epidermal lamellae. The red tissue below provides the blood supply and nutrients that support those lamellae, and beneath that lies the coffin bone (P3).

What we can’t see are the collagen fibres that link inner hood wall to bone.

I am  working on a series of stains that I can use to show you clearly what these collagen fibres look like in a slice.

What many people don’t realise is that this entire interface is designed to move.

With every footfall there is microscopic movement between the hoof capsule and P3. The coffin bone is not rigidly attached to the hoof wall. Instead, it is suspended within the hoof capsule by millions of interlocking lamellae that allow controlled movement while supporting the horse’s weight.

A remarkable natural suspension system hidden inside every hoof.
