We spent the night with the Garrards Horse and Hound Team, and what a night it was at Albion Park.
Lovely people with the same core goals, same love of the horse and the same moral centric to assist in protecting your horse’s gastrointestinal health.

Why do we need a gut supportive feed?

The underlying goal and main expected potential benefit of including Gut Align feed into the horse’s diet and gut health strategy is to build resistance to challenges faced by race horse’s, high performance horse’s and those under stress, whether that be travel, recovering from illness or other factors.

Gut Align is a preventative strategy and not a cure, therefore for best results it needs to be fed on a daily basis as it may reduce the incidence, duration and severity of potential gastrointestinal tract disorders by supplying the horse’s GI microbiome with additives of varying modes of action and research proven efficacy in:

▪️Promoting growth of beneficial bacteria

▪️ Inhibiting the colonisation of pathogens

▪️ Reducing the incidence of all three main types of intestinal toxins (endo/exo/mycotoxins) and their potential cytotoxic effect on epithelium cells (barrier function)

▪️ Reducing potential cellular damage caused from excessive intestinal ammonia levels and drops in pH

▪️ Assistance in priming the immune system so the host can mount an immune response more rapidly

A few tips to encourage gut health in your horse 🦠

🌿 A horse is designed to eat roughage, approximately 1.5% of their body weight daily just to maintain gut health. This can be achieved by feeding hay, chaff, fibre supplements and by grazing on grass. An excellent way to ensure the horse meets this requirement is to allow free access to hay.

🌿 Take care with grain, only feed grains that have been steam flaked, extruded or micronised. Cooked grains allow the starch content contained within the grain to be more easily digested. For horses in competition and racing, choose premixed feeds that include steam flaked grains & legumes, fats and vitamins & minerals that are nutritionally balanced and include a prebiotic and probiotic. For horses and ponies with a lower energy requirement, low starch options with quality easily digestible protein and balanced nutritional content is preferred.

🌿 Never work or ride a horse on an empty stomach. A horse relies on there being a physical barrier of high fibre food to protect the acid in the lower glandular area from splashing up into the unprotected non-glandular area (squamous) and causing damage. This is an important simple step that can help minimise the risk of developing gastric ulcers.

🌿 Ensure your horse has access to clean & fresh drinking water and that any dietary changes are made over a 2 week period as sudden changes in the horses diet may upset the gut.

🌿Including a prebiotic and/or probiotics can be beneficial to your horses diet, by assisting in the microbial population to ensure healthy digestive function and overall well being. It is the bacteria in the hind gut that ferment fibre which produces volatile fatty acids that the horse uses as an energy source and to synthesize B group vitamins and nutrients essential for health.

🌿Harmony Plus and Gut Align are a highly palatable fibre source to enhance microbial fermentation in the hindgut, which may improve digestion, vitamin production, feed efficiency and overall health.

We're excited to share how much we love the journey we're on with Black Horse Naturals!

Being recognized at the Equine Business Awards was an incredible honour, and it wouldn't be possible without the amazing support from you, our customers, retailers and suppliers.
Thank you for being part of this adventure with us!

On a special note, it was our daughter’s Birthday. After our nomination, I said to her “Grace, this is a National Award, we have no hope of bringing home such an accolade”
Luckily, we settled on meeting for a birthday lunch with her beautiful grandparents, mainly due to how busy our girl is running her own company, we then emailed Hannah at equinebusinessaustralia, booked our tickets, asked our neighbours - and biggest supporters of us, sat on the table with Fraser Hutchison - not only the eventual winner of the Equine Business of the Year Award, but also long time friend, dating back to the old Horseland days!
