Spring has officially arrived! 🌸🐾

The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up and there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy time with our dogs.

The change of season is also a timely reminder to:

🌸 Check that flea, tick and worming protection is up to date
🌸 Look out for seasonal itching, licking and skin irritation
🌸 Check your yard for toxic plants and hidden hazards
🌸 Be aware that snakes become more active as the weather warms
🌸 Carry water and choose cooler times for longer walks

🌼🐾 Spring is Just Around the Corner... Is Your Dog Ready? 🐾🌼

Longer days, warmer weather and more time outdoors are almost here! As we say goodbye to winter, now is the perfect time to prepare your dog for the changing season.

Here are a few simple things to keep in mind:
🌿 Stay up to date with parasite prevention
As temperatures rise, so does the activity of fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Speak to your veterinarian about the most appropriate preventative care for your dog.
🌸 Watch for seasonal allergies
Just like people, some dogs can react to pollens and grasses. If you notice excessive scratching, licking, red skin or recurring ear issues, it's worth seeking veterinary advice.
🚶 Ease back into exercise
With the weather becoming more inviting, gradually increase your dog's activity if they've had a quieter winter. Regular walks, play and training sessions help build fitness safely.
💧 Remember hydration
Warmer days mean your dog will need more fresh water, particularly during exercise or outings.
🌱 Check your backyard
Spring gardening often means fertilisers, mulch and new plants. Make sure anything your dog can access is pet-safe before they explore.

Spring is one of the best times of the year to get outside, try a new dog sport, visit your local club or simply enjoy quality time with your canine companion.

Why Do Dogs Scratch the Bed Before They Settle In?

You've fluffed the bed. They've fluffed it again.

Scratch. Scratch. Scratch. Circle. Circle. One more scratch for good measure... then finally, it's time for a nap! 😴

So why do dogs insist on rearranging their bed before settling down?

🐶 It's instinct! Long before comfy dog beds and cosy lounges, wild dogs would scratch at grass, leaves or dirt to create a comfortable sleeping spot.

🌡️ It can help with temperature. Scratching the surface may have helped expose cooler or warmer ground, depending on the weather.

🏡 They're making it ""just right."" Much like we fluff our pillows or straighten the doona, many dogs simply enjoy creating the perfect place to relax.

🐾 They're leaving their mark. Dogs have scent glands in their paws, so a few scratches can also leave behind their scent, making the area feel familiar and safe.

Every dog has their own bedtime routine. Some spin three times, some perform an enthusiastic digging routine, and others simply collapse wherever they happen to be!
