Their work may include:

💙 Providing nursing care and administering treatments
💙 Assisting with diagnostic testing
💙 Supporting emergency and critical-care patients
💙 Educating owners about ongoing care
💙 Comforting animals when they need it most

Much of their work takes place behind the scenes, but its impact is felt by countless dogs and families.

Heading away for the NSW Labour Day long weekend? A little preparation can help make travelling safer and more comfortable for everyone, including your dog.

Before setting off:

🚗 Restrain your dog properly. In NSW, driving with a dog or other animal unrestrained in a vehicle can result in a penalty. Use a correctly fitted car harness attached to an appropriate seatbelt point or transport your dog in a properly secured crate or suitable restraint.
🐕 Never allow your dog to sit on the driver’s lap or move around where they could distract the driver or interfere with the vehicle’s controls.
💧 Pack plenty of fresh water and a travel bowl.
🐾 Plan regular rest, exercise and toilet breaks.
🏷️ Check that your dog’s identification and microchip contact details are current.
🏡 Confirm that your destination and accommodation are genuinely dog-friendly.
💊 Pack any medication, food and essential care items your dog may need.
🌡️ Plan walks and activities around the forecast temperature.

Most importantly, never leave your dog unattended in a parked car. A vehicle can become dangerously hot within minutes, even when the weather feels mild, the windows are open or the car is parked in the shade. Leaving a dog in conditions that cause distress or suffering may constitute an animal-cruelty offence in NSW.

If you cannot take your dog with you when you leave the vehicle, leave them safely at home or arrange for a responsible person to care for them.

A safe journey begins before you leave the driveway.

Deaf Dog Awareness Week 🤟🐾

Deaf dogs can live happy, active and fulfilling lives. Training may look a little different, but dogs are excellent observers of movement and body language. With patience and consistency, visual communication can become a very effective training tool.

Helpful considerations include:

🐾 Teach clear and consistent hand signals
🐾 Use visual markers to communicate success
🐾 Reward your dog for regularly checking in with you
🐾 Keep your dog safely contained or leashed in unsecured areas
🐾 Approach carefully when your dog is sleeping
🐾 Ensure identification details are current
🐾 Ask visitors and children not to startle the dog

✂️ Having your dog groomed once a year in NOT ok ✂️

🐩 Long or curly coats form tight mats that pull on the skin. This causes sores, hot spots, and skin infections

🛁 Oil, dirt, and dead skin cells build up on the skin and coat. Regular washing prevents bad smells and bacteria growth

🐾 Nails left uncut for a year can curl into the paw pads and cause joint pain.

Spring has officially arrived! 🌸🐾

The days are getting longer, the weather is warming up and there are plenty of opportunities to get outside and enjoy time with our dogs.

The change of season is also a timely reminder to:

🌸 Check that flea, tick and worming protection is up to date
🌸 Look out for seasonal itching, licking and skin irritation
🌸 Check your yard for toxic plants and hidden hazards
🌸 Be aware that snakes become more active as the weather warms
🌸 Carry water and choose cooler times for longer walks
