🐮 Dr Megan’s afternoon was udderly adorable!

Polly, Bambi, Billy and Bob were the cutest little patients, making this visit feel like a very easy day at work! 🐄🥰

These four were so fun to hang out with — no complaints, no paperwork (well, almost 😉), just plenty of cuteness and a whole lot of personality! Just try to get away with NOT patting Billy, he will head butt you until you give in! ADORABLE 🩺🐮

Meet Sophie & Claire 🩺

We're excited to welcome Sophie and Claire, two final-year veterinary students who will be joining the DDVS team for the next four weeks!

At Dalby & District Vets, we're incredibly passionate about supporting the next generation of veterinarians, not just throughout their practical placements, but well beyond graduation.

Why? Because the future of our industry depends on it. ❤️

The transition from university to clinical practice can be challenging, and retaining young vets within our profession is a very real concern. In fact, Australian research found that only 64% of veterinary graduates were still working in private practice in Australia five years after graduating.

We believe that if we want a strong, sustainable veterinary industry, we need to invest in the passionate people entering it. That means providing mentorship, practical experience, encouragement and an environment where young vets feel supported, capable and excited about their careers.

As a true rural mixed practice, we're also particularly passionate about encouraging the next generation of mixed-practice veterinarians. By sharing our knowledge, building professional relationships and showcasing the diversity and rewards of rural veterinary work, we hope to help keep skilled vets in our regional communities for many years to come. 🐴🐮🐶🐱

After all, the students we support today are the vets our communities will rely on tomorrow!

📚🐾 Learning, Growing & Improving! 🐾📚

Our wonderful Clinic Coordinator, Sarah, recently travelled to Brisbane to participate in a Provet Inventory Training Day! 💙

At Dalby and District Veterinary Services, we believe that continuous learning and professional development are so important, no matter what role you play in the veterinary industry.

This was a fantastic opportunity for Sarah to expand her knowledge, learn new skills and bring back fresh ideas to help improve our clinic's inventory management and day-to-day operations.

🩸 COULD YOUR DOG BE A LIFESAVING HERO? 🩸

We're currently reviewing and updating our Canine Blood Donor List, and we're looking for some very special four-legged heroes to join our team of lifesavers!

Did you know that, just like humans, dogs can require life-saving blood transfusions? Blood donations can make all the difference for patients suffering from severe blood loss, trauma, anaemia, certain toxicities and other critical illnesses.

At Dalby & District Vets, we see a high emergency caseload and offer an after-hours emergency service, which means we're not infrequently in need of blood donors at short notice.

Could your dog be our next lifesaver?

Ideally, our canine blood donors should be:
🐶 Over 20kg
🐶 Middle-aged and in good general health
🐶 Up to date with vaccinations
🐶 Up to date with heartworm prevention
🐶 Ideally not involved in pig hunting
🐶 Friendly, calm and comfortable being handled by our veterinary team

Being on our donor list doesn't mean your dog will be required to donate regularly. It simply means we may contact you when a patient is in urgent need of a transfusion. All potential donors will be assessed for suitability before donating.

Sometimes, saving a life takes a village (and a very good dog!). 🐕

This week, we're celebrating the incredible veterinary nurses who make Dalby and District Veterinary Services such a special place! 🩺🐶🐱🐴🐮
Our fabulous nurses are the heart of our clinic, working tirelessly behind the scenes (and sometimes in the middle of absolute chaos! 🤪) to ensure every animal receives the love, care and attention they deserve.
From comforting nervous patients and cuddling puppies to assisting in surgeries, monitoring anaesthetics, caring for hospital patients and everything in between — there is so much more to being a vet nurse than just cuddling cute animals! ❤️
Their days are filled with hard work, compassion, laughter, dedication and sometimes a few tears. No two days are ever the same, but they always give it their all! 🥰

SPRING CALVING IS HERE! 🐮

Calving season has well and truly started, and our large animal team has been kept busy helping our local producers through one of the busiest times of the year!

Thankfully, most calvings go exactly as they should and require no intervention. But knowing when a cow needs a helping hand can make all the difference to the outcome for both mum and calf.

🚨 Things to look out for:

⏱️ More than 30 minutes of active straining without progress
If a cow is actively straining but there is no progress after around 30 minutes, it’s time to investigate.

🐄 An abnormal presentation
You should normally see the calf's two front feet and nose. If you can see something different — such as one leg, the head without the feet, or the hind legs — the calf may be positioned abnormally and assistance may be needed.

😰 A cow becoming exhausted or distressed
If mum is becoming tired, distressed or simply isn't coping, don't wait too long to seek help.

Early intervention can make a big difference, so if you're unsure, give us a call. Our vets are here to help you through calving season.

Debunking Common Heartworm Myths in Dogs 🐶

Heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal condition, but there’s a lot of misinformation out there about how dogs catch it and who is at risk. Here are a few common myths cleared up:

❌ Myth 1: "My dog stays indoors, so they don't need heartworm protection."
mosquitoes—which spread heartworm larvae—frequently find their way indoors. A single mosquito bite is all it takes!

❌ Myth 2: "Heartworm isn't a problem in our area."
Fact: We do actually diagnose cases of heartworm right here in Dalby. Heartworm is present in our local environment, and unprotected dogs are at real risk.

❌ Myth 3: "Intestinal worming tablets cover heartworm too."
Fact: Not all routine all-in-one or intestinal wormers protect against heartworm. It's essential to double-check that your dog’s specific preventative covers heartworm prevention specifically.

💙 Protect Your Pup
Preventing heartworm is much easier, safer, and far less expensive than treating an active infection. We strongly recommend keeping your dog up to date on their heartworm prevention all year round—whether that's through regular monthly treatments or an annual preventative injection.
