Your guinea pig’s p**p can tell you A LOT about their health!

From small, dry p**ps to changes in colour, shape or consistency.

It can give you important clues about what’s happening inside your piggy’s body.

Normal p**ps should generally be oval shaped, firm but not overly dry, and fairly consistent in size. Smaller p**ps, diarrhoea, unusual shapes or a sudden drop in the amount of p**p can be signs that something isn’t right.

Remember, guinea pigs are prey animals and can hide illness incredibly well, so monitoring their p**ps, appetite and behaviour is an important part of keeping them healthy. If your piggy stops eating or p**ping, has watery diarrhoea or produces significantly fewer p**ps than usual, contact an exotic pet vet urgently.

When it comes to guinea pigs, sometimes the most important health clues are sitting right in front of you… in the p**p!

🐹 Healthy Guinea Pig vs. Unwell Guinea Pig — do you know the signs?

Guinea pigs are experts at hiding illness, which means they can sometimes be quite unwell before we notice something is wrong. That’s why knowing the early warning signs is so important!

🚨 Watch for:
• Not eating / difficulty eating
• Not p**ping or straining/squeaking while urinating
• Lethargy or unusual tiredness
• Staying in one spot
• Sitting in a hunched position

⚠️ Not eating or not p**ping is especially important to take seriously. Guinea pigs need to keep their digestive system moving, and a change in eating or toileting can quickly become an emergency.

If your piggy is showing any of these signs, don’t wait and see — get them to an exotics-savvy vet ASAP. 🩺

Here’s a quick rundown of what your piggies should be eating every day! 👇

🌾 Grass Hay — 80%
Top of the list! Fresh, clean, dry hay should be available 24/7. It’s the most important part of your piggy’s diet!

🥣 Piggy Pellets — A small amount
Make sure you’re choosing a quality, guinea pig-specific pellet. We recommend brands like Burgess, Bunny Nature, Oxbow and Cavy Origins.

🥬 Fresh Veggies — Daily (1 cup per piggy)
Greens, capsicum and cucumber are great everyday options. Keep things interesting by rotating in veggies that should be offered less often, like carrot, kale and sweet potato.

🍓 Fruit & Treats — A couple of times a week
Think of these as the sweets section! Just like chocolate and cake for us, fruit and piggy treats should be limited to occasional treats to help keep your piggies happy and healthy. 💚
