Koze has just finished her full course of kitten vaccines with us and each visit has been full of treats, play, and positive experiences 🤩

Puppy and kitten appointments play a huge role in shaping how pets feel about vet visits for the rest of their lives. That’s why it’s so important to make those early consultations positive ✨

For Koze, that meant gentle handling, plenty of treats and toys, and letting her move at her own pace.

The result? A confident, relaxed kitten who was happy to see us, playful during her visit, and didn’t even notice her vaccines 💉

Recently, we welcomed medical consultant Dr. Sue Ramoo from to our Coburg clinic to perform an echocardiogram and ECG on our beautiful 5.5-year-old Deerhound patient, Lupa 💓

After detecting a mild heart murmur (grade 2/6), we recommended further testing to get a detailed picture of Lupa’s heart structure, function, and rhythm. These tests help us assess the significance of any underlying heart conditions and tailor care accordingly l🫀

To make Lupa as comfortable as possible, the procedure was performed in our quiet, spacious back room with her guardian by her side until she drifted off under gentle sedation. Nurse Kate monitored Lupa’s vital signs throughout, while Nurse Eva prepared her for the scan. Lupa stayed warm and cosy with soft bedding, a heated mat, and a towel over her eyes to block any light stimulus.

Dr Sue performed the scan and diagnosed Lupa with Myxomatous Mitral Value Disease and recommended she commence heart medication immediately 💊

After the procedure, our nurses monitored Lupa closely as she slowly woke up and her guardian was there to comfort and brush her as she came to, bringing a little extra calm and familiarity to her recovery ❤️‍🩹

We’re so grateful to Dr. Sue for her expert care and advice, and to Lupa’s guardian for her unwavering dedication ✨

Our priority is always to ensure our patients (and their guardians) feel safe and supported, especially during procedures that can feel a little daunting 🤝

Armani knows exactly what he wants… and it’s back scratches from Nurse Kate 😌💙

We’ve had the pleasure of seeing Armani for the past three years, and over that time we’ve learned he’s a back scratch guy through and through. While he’ll happily accept a treat, it’s the good ol’ scritches that really win him over.

Just like people, every patient has their own unique preferences, and we make a point to not only remember them, but also note them in their clinical records so we can tailor each visit to their needs.

For Armani, that means plenty of back scratches during his health checks as a form of positive reinforcement 🤩

Building trust and getting to know our patients as individuals is one of the most rewarding parts of what we do 🥰

🐾 From 8 weeks to 16 weeks, we’ve been lucky to watch little Fletcher grow and thrive!

He may only be 4 months old, but Fletcher has already clocked up a number of positive vet visits in his memory bank 🧠

These early, positive associations during such a critical period in Fletcher’s life are building a strong foundation for a lifetime of stress-free vet care 🩺

We love being part of Fletcher’s journey! 🐶✨

Fear Free vet care is so much more than just giving treats or putting a Lickimat down in front of a patient.

It’s about choice, consent, consideration, creative thinking, trust and teamwork 🤝

During Jeremy’s home visit, we carefully considered every step to suit his unique preferences and the priorities of the appointment.

We carried out his exam by the window, a warm, naturally lit space where he could enjoy watching the world go by. The door was left open so he had the option to step outside if he wanted. Part of his exam was done up on his perch, as many cats feel more secure when elevated 🐱

When it came time to listen to his heart, we paired it with something he genuinely loves: being brushed! His human gently stroked him with his favourite brush while Dr Brigida completed the check, helping him stay calm and relaxed 🩺

Yes, food is a common and important reinforcement, but Fear Free care is about SO 👏 MUCH 👏 MORE 👏

Some animals prefer brushing, gentle touch, play, or just the comfort of their favourite person nearby. Every animal is different and their preferences can change from day to day.

That’s why flexibility and creativity are essential in Fear Free care. By tuning into what works best for each individual and adapting our approach in real time, we can create positive experiences that help our patient feel safe, respected, and even happy during vet visits ☺️

Because when we take the time to listen and adjust, vet visits can become something our patients actually enjoy 💙

You’ll never guess what Dr Thulz is giving Merida…
It’s a Bordatella oral vaccine! (aka kennel cough vaccine)

Our standard vaccine protocol for adult dogs includes:
💉 Injectable core vaccine every 3 years
👅 Oral kennel cough vaccine annually

This year, Merida received her oral vaccine and thanks to some clever cooperative care techniques, it was a pawsitive experience from start to finish✨

Here’s how we made it easy and fear-free:

1. Present an empty syringe ➡️ Reinforce with a treat for investigating.

2. Add some Kong Easy Treat to the syringe ➡️ Reinforce with a treat for licking.

3. Draw up the vaccine into a syringe ➡️ Reinforce with a treat for watching.

4. Let Merida sniff the loaded syringe ➡️ More treats

5. Offer Kong Easy Treat on the loaded syringe ➡️ Treat for licking.

6. Gently administer the vaccine onto her gums ➡️ Jackpot of treats!!!

7. Finish with an empty syringe + Kong Easy Treat ➡️ Treat again once all treat licked off for a positive final memory.

Why all the steps? Well, it doesn’t take much time at all but can make such a difference! Every positive experience builds Merida’s trust bank, making future vet visits smoother and stress-free.

Even if your pet has never had an issue with syringes, breaking things down like this can prevent fear before it starts and that’s always worth the extra effort 💙🌟

Mochi and Cooper, ready for their examination 😺😺

For our feline patients we bring along fluffy mats to our home visit appointments to provide a soft and stable surface to perform a physical examination 🩺

Providing a non-slip surface can greatly reduce stress for patients by making them feel safe, secure and comfortable. Surfaces that are hard, cold or slippery can create added stressors to a veterinary visit and can be avoided with a simple mat.

These fluffy mats are fresh for each patient and sprayed with Feliway, a calming pheromone spray, 20 minutes prior to the appointment 😸 ✨

Mochi loved our fluffy mat so much, he decided it was his new bed 🛏️

Small gestures to improve patient comfort which helps set our patients up for successful and stress free visit 😻
