🐰 ALICE HERE! ACT RESIDENTS, WE NEED YOU! Rescue is wonderful, but it shouldn’t be the only answer. Humans, it’s time to do better!
At Hoppy Housecalls we're calling for stronger protections for rabbits in the ACT. Rescue alone cannot solve the heartbreaking consequences of unregulated rabbit breeding and selling 💔
Every day, rabbits are abandoned, surrendered and left without homes, while rescue organisations are stretched beyond their limits.
We have contributed to the creation of the below petition calling for:
🐰 Breeder licensing.
🐰 Mandatory microchipping.
🐰 Desexing - subject to veterinary advice.
🐰 Requiring baby bunnies to remain with mum until AT LEAST 8 weeks old.
🐰 Better rabbit welfare standards, including minimum housing requirements to reflect RSPCA recommendations.
🐰 Greater opportunities for rescue rabbits to find loving homes, e.g. encouraging pet shops to advertise desexed rescue rabbits available for adoption, instead of ones that have been bred for sale.

🐰: Mumther? Mum? You ok? I yeeted the thing at you - where is my cookie? Should I yeet something else??
Featuring: Adorable Alice 🤍 We couldn't do our next Canberra recommendation post without introducing the newest, most cheeky member of Dr Mae's family - so here is the cutest menace that ever existed 😅
Alice is 4kg of energy, appetite and brains. She is so smart that Dr Mae decided to try and train her to hand things to her so Alice can be a receptionist - this has backfired slightly though 😅 Alice has decided that this means if she throws ANYTHING at her mum, thIs should be rewarded with cookies immediately. She threw a fork at her mum the other day 😅🤣 Note to future clinic staff - keep all syringes, scalpels and sharp objects AWAY from Alice 🫠
Alice has a very interesting rescue story 😅 The Rabbit Sanctuary Australia recieved reports of a large white rabbit hanging around a school, mugging all the small children for pats and snacks. Considering the fact that Alice LOVES pats and snacks, and her penchant for escaping EVERY obstacle anyone puts in her way... we have decided that Alice deliberately escaped a backyard hutch situation and moved into a school where she knew she could have her every need met on demand - thank you very much 😅 Despite being chased away by the teachers on multiple occasions- Alice kept coming back to where the pats and snacks were. Luckily TRS rescuers were able to catch Alice and relocate her to an indoor foster home so she would stop harassing the children 😅💙
Since moving into Dr Mae's house, Alice has not wasted any time claiming her place as Queen of the Castle. She has ensured she has interrupted every snuggle Dr Mae has with her cats, and tried to evict every client bunny who has dared show up for an emergency consult 😅 what no one seems to understand is that in Alice's opinion, Dr Mae is Mum, and Mum is Alice's 🥹💙

🐰: Oooh! A sign! It says.... Nice? I am Nice! Ask all the ladybuns, I very very NICE! 🥰
Featuring: Cutie Quinn, Dr Mae's self-appointed "lady's man" - just don't ask the ladybuns for their actual opinion 🤣 Quinn is ACTUALLY a very sweet little bun - once he gets his learned amorous behaviours out of the way 😅 It's not really his fault, he spent the first three years of his life as a breeding buck, before he was medically surrendered to Dr Mae. He is slowly learning that ladybuns don't enjoy h***y behaviour, and that if he doesn't harrass them they are much more likely to cuddle and snuggle him 💙
Hoppy Hint: We understand that planning for your bunny's care when you are on holidays can be a bit overwhelming. To try and help you decide, we have broken down the Pros and Cons (our opinion) of the three main options below:
HOUSE VISITS/PET SITTING
Pros:
-Familiar home space, with all of it's normal smells, food, routine etc.
Cons:
-Most sitters are only able to visit once or twice a day, meaning fast moving issues might go unnoticed for hours.
-A stranger will have access to your living space.
IN-HOME BOARDING
Pros:
-More regular supervision, interaction/socialisation.
-You do not need to give anyone access to your home.
Cons:
-Unfamiliar space, with unfamiliar smells and sounds.
-May have less roaming space than they normally do at home.
-There may be other animals in the same house.
COMMERCIAL BOARDING KENNELS
Pros:
-Availability can sometimes be easier as they can run at a much higher volume of clients.
-Cost wise it can also be cheaper due to the above.
Cons:
-Currently no bunny specific on-site boarding facilities in Canberra, so all options are dog or cat focused.
-Kennel hands for these facilities are unlikely to be bunny savvy.
-Unfamiliar space, with unfamiliar smells and sounds.
-These facilities typically use a tub cage for bunnies.
-Likely to be other animals, incl. predators housed at the same facility.
It is important to remember that what works for one bunny, won't always work for different one. Our posts over the next few days will cover some of the amazing sitting and boarding businesses in Canberra 💙

🐰: Christmas talk in AUGUST?! Absolutely not. Put the decorations away Stinky Hoom, I am a PROFESSIONAL, and I refuse to be rushed into the festive spirit!!
Featuring: Beautiful Brandy, one half of Dr Mae's cheeky Brown Girls 🤎 Brandy might be protesting the early decorations, but the calendar doesn't lie - Christmas is closer than it looks! 🎅🏻 Bunny boarding and sitting business often fill up months in advance to big holidays, so now is the time to secure your spot! Remember, rabbits require specialised care, so making sure your sitter or boarder is experienced is the best way to try and ensure your bunny stays healthy and happy while you are away 💙
Hoppy Hint: When looking for care, always ask:
-What experience do you have with bunnies?
-What experience do you have in identifying health issues in bunnies?
-What is your protocol to establish if a bunny is not eating or pooping?
-Are you experienced and confident treating health conditions under vet advice?
-Are you able to take my bunny to a vet if I am concerned regarding any symptoms you have described to me?
-Do you have an emergency protocol for the situation where you think my bunny needs urgent vet care, but you aren't able to contact me?
-What are your infection control protocols to ensure my bunnies are protected from exposure to any diseases other bunnies in your care may have?
-Do you require all bunnies that are in your care to have a valid filavac vaccination?
-How much time will you spend with my bunny to observe their behaviours, and provide them with human interaction?
For boarding specifically:
-Will my bunny be housed indoors or outdoors?
-Can I visit, or see photos of the space my bunnies will be housed in?
-Will there be sufficient space for my bunny to exercise in their enclosure, or will they be given daily access to a run?
-Are your boarding facilities protected from the heat and cold?
-Are your boarding facilities mosquito and predator proof?
-Are predator animals also housed in your facility, if yes are they near where my bunny will be living?

Farewell Nova Hingee 🌈
Our Glossy Void Queen has hopped over the Rainbow Bridge, leaving all of us at the Hoppy heartbroken 💔
Despite being the oldest of Dr Mae's bunnies, Nova showed no signs of being 10 years old - no arthritis, shiny healthy coat, voracious appetite, loving her life as a pampered indoor housebun at the Hingee House ❤️
Nova was a proper dignified ladybun, who toilet trained her husbun Quinn in a day. If you wanted to live with Nova, there will be no peeing or pooping outside the litterbox! It got to the stage where Nova just had to shoot a look at Quinn and he would scurry off to sit in the litter tray 😅 According to Quinn though - whatever his gorgeous wifey wanted, his gorgeous wifey got. With extra kissies for her on the side. She literally was the Queen of Quinn's heart 😭
A few weeks ago, Nova became really unwell - no appetite, painful tummy presses. Xrays showed no obstruction, blood tests showed organ function within normal ranges. With very intensive medical care from her mum, Nova still wasn't improving, and she was rapidly losing weight. An ultrasound showed a potential space occupying mass in her stomach, and since none of the medical management was working - surgery was our only chance of trying to give Nova more time 🥺 Unfortunately, despite Mae and Claire's best efforts, Nova didn't recover post surgery, and passed peacefully with her mum and Quinn by her side 💔
It helps to remember that in her last few days she got to spend a lot of time outside, one of her favourite places, sunbathing and nibbling fresh grass - flopped near her mum, while they watched Quinn trip over twigs, being upset about the dirt, and generally being confused about WHY he was outside 😅
Thank you Nova for being you - the classiest, tidiest, sweetest lil Void Queen in existence. We all love and miss you so much 😭💔
