The difference 6 months can make!!

This handsome Percheron (Leo) first presented in January with significant muscle asymmetry in his shoulders (first pic) along with a range of other issues (tripping, short stepping forelimbs, slight shuffling gait). Fast forward 6 months and his symmetry has drastically improved (second pic).

Following vet clearance, our physiotherapy assessment found an issue with his general right side strength including through his abdominals/obliques - Leo has a unique diagnosis of three small umbilical hernias which contribute to the ability to engage your core and therefore create a stable platform for the rest of your body.

A combination of gentle core strengthening exercises (we went wayyyy back to basics!), targeted pole work, balance exercises and general conditioning performed consistently over the past 6 months has resulted in the Leo of today - improved symmetry, improved propulsion in gait, improved body condition and generally a much happier horse!

What does a physio session for your horse look like??

- A thorough history of the current issue and any previous issues your horse has had.
- Movement assessment - how they move tells us a lot!
- Hands on palpation assessment - feeling through each muscle group provides more information. When combined with the history and movement assessment it will also tell us what is compensatory and what is a primary muscle tension.
- Treatment that is individualised to your horse and the findings from the assessment. Can include dry needling/acupuncture, cupping, electrotherapy, soft tissue release, joint mobilisations, proprioceptive work.
- Exercise program - arguably the most important part of the treatment. This involves targeted strengthening, stretching or workload modifications based on your goals and the current symptoms. If nothing changes, nothing changes!

Any questions let me know 🐴

Equine Pain Face - some subtle but important things to look out for in the injured (or suspected injured) horse.

Some of these can be behavioural, however when several are combined together with a suspected mechanism of injury they’re a clear tell that the horse is unable to mask their pain.
