🐍 SNAKE SEASON IS HERE IN THE RIVERINA 🐍

With the warmer weather arriving around Tumut, Gundagai and the surrounding Snowy Valleys, our local snakes are becoming active again.

That also means our dogs, cats and other pets are more likely to cross paths with them, particularly around yards, sheds, wood piles, paddocks and long grass.

🐾 Would you recognise the signs of a snake bite in your pet?

Keep an eye out for:

⚠️ Sudden weakness, wobbliness or collapse
⚠️ Trembling or muscle shakes
⚠️ Dilated pupils or reduced blinking
⚠️ Vomiting or suddenly appearing unwell
⚠️ Collapse followed by an apparent recovery
⚠️ Difficulty walking or paralysis
⚠️ Loss of bladder or bowel control
⚠️ Bleeding from the nose, mouth or other areas
⚠️ Dark, red or unusually coloured urine

🚨 One of the most important things to remember: you may NEVER see a bite mark.

Snake fang wounds can be tiny and easily hidden under fur. A pet can also appear relatively normal immediately after an encounter before becoming seriously unwell.

If you suspect your pet has been bitten, or you’ve seen your pet interacting with a snake, treat it as an emergency.

🐾 Keep your pet as calm and still as possible.
🏥 Contact your nearest vet immediately.
⏱️ Do not wait for symptoms to appear.

Early veterinary treatment can make a huge difference to your pet’s chances of survival. ❤️

And if you find a snake on your property, don’t attempt to catch, kill or move it yourself. Keep pets and people well away and call a licensed snake catcher.

It’s a question that comes up from time to time, and it’s a fair one. Why does it cost money to have a snake removed?

When you call a licensed snake catcher, you’re paying for much more than the few minutes it may take to physically catch the snake.

Behind every call-out is training, experience, licensing, specialised equipment, insurance, fuel, travel and time. There’s also work that happens after we leave your property, including safely relocating the snake and keeping the required records of captures and relocations.

Snake catchers also make themselves available at all sorts of hours and often at very short notice. When the phone rings, we could be leaving dinner, family time or whatever else we’re doing to head out and help someone who has unexpectedly found a snake in their home, shed, yard or workplace.

And, of course, there’s the job itself.

Australia is home to some of the most venomous snakes in the world. Safely locating, identifying and capturing one while keeping the people, pets and snake itself out of harm’s way takes knowledge and experience.

🐍 Snake season is just around the corner!

While the nights are still nice and cold, the warmer days are starting to creep in. That means snakes won’t be far behind.

Now is the perfect time to get your yard ready before snake activity really starts to increase.

A few simple things can make a big difference:
• Keep your grass short.
• Remove piles of timber, tin and other rubbish.
• Keep firewood stacked neatly and off the ground if possible.
• Trim overgrown gardens and long grass around sheds and fences.
• Reduce places where rodents can hide, as they attract snakes looking for an easy meal.

A tidy yard won’t guarantee you won’t see a snake, but it can make your property much less attractive to them.

If you do come across a snake, stay well clear, keep pets and children away, and give me a call. I’ll safely remove and relocate it.
