🎉 Happy Horse Birthday! 🐴🎂

Today we celebrate the official birthday of every horse in the Southern Hemisphere.

To the horses that carry us, challenge us, teach us patience, build our confidence, and remind us that the best things in life are earned, not given.

Whether they’re elite athletes, trusted teammates, cherished companions, or wise old retirees, every horse leaves a lasting hoofprint on the lives of the people who love them.

As veterinarians, it is a privilege to care for these incredible animals through every stage of life—from their very first days to their well-earned retirement years. They give us so much, and they deserve the very best care in return.

Happy Birthday to all the wonderful horses who make our days brighter and our lives richer. Here’s to another year of health, happiness, and plenty of carrots. 🥰🐴

🐴 Is your Mare (or Jenny) expecting?

A newborn foal and mare check is one of the most important early investments you can make.

The first 24 hours of a foal’s life are critical. Even foals that appear bright, nursing and well can have early issues that are difficult to spot without a veterinary examination.

A newborn check allows us to assess both mare and foal, including:

• Foal’s general health, hydration, temperature, heart and respiratory rate
• Ability to stand, suckle and pass urine and meconium
• Umbilicus, joints, eyes, mouth/palate and limb conformation
• Signs of infection, prematurity, neonatal maladjustment or other concerns
• Mare’s udder, milk supply, placenta, reproductive tract and post-foaling recovery

A key part of the visit is an IgG blood test, ideally performed at around 12–18 hours of age.

IgG is an antibody the foal receives from the mare’s colostrum (first milk). These antibodies provide vital protection against infection while the foal’s own immune system develops. If a foal has not absorbed enough colostrum, they are at much greater risk of serious infections such as septicaemia, joint ill and pneumonia.

Early testing means that if passive transfer is inadequate, treatment such as plasma can be provided promptly—before the foal becomes unwell.

Early assessment can make a big difference to a healthy start. This gorgeous pair were given the all clear today 🩷

👁️ Did you know we can use your horse’s own plasma to help treat certain eye conditions?

Plasma therapy is a valuable treatment for corneal ulcers and other eye diseases where the cornea is at risk of melting or delayed healing.

A small blood sample is collected from your horse and processed in a centrifuge to separate the plasma. This plasma contains natural proteins, growth factors and anti-protease substances that can help protect the cornea, reduce tissue breakdown and support healing.

Because the plasma comes from your horse, it is a safe treatment option with minimal risk of adverse reactions.

Early diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions can make a huge difference to outcomes, so if your horse develops a sore, weepy or squinting eye, contact your veterinarian promptly.

👁️ Continuing Education in Equine Ophthalmology 🐴

Dr Kassy had the privilege of attending an intensive Equine Ophthalmology Workshop hosted by The Equine Practice Company.

The workshop was led by internationally renowned equine ophthalmologist Professor Dennis Brooks (USA), alongside an outstanding team of tutors, providing a fantastic opportunity to further develop knowledge and practical skills in the diagnosis, treatment and management of equine eye diseases.

The program covered a wide range of ocular conditions and advanced ophthalmic procedures, with a strong focus on practical, hands-on learning. Keeping up to date with the latest developments in equine medicine allows us to continue providing the highest standard of care for our patients.

A sincere thank you to The Equine Practice Company, Professor Dennis Brooks, the tutors, sponsors, organisers and fellow delegates who made the workshop such a valuable and enjoyable experience. The willingness to share knowledge, experience and clinical insights was greatly appreciated.

We’re excited to bring this new knowledge and enhanced skills back to our patients and clients across South East Queensland.

✨ From open wound to tidy stitch-up ✨

This horse presented with a deep laceration that required prompt cleaning, assessment and suturing. With good wound preparation and timely repair, we were able to achieve a neat closure and set it up for the best possible healing outcome. We also made sure no vital structures were damaged.

Early veterinary attention makes a huge difference with wound management and healing time. If in doubt, it’s always worth having it checked. 🐴💙
