Today Nala surprised me.

We normally stick to the same familiar path.
She knows where we’re going, she knows what to expect, and that little bit of predictability helps her feel safe.

But today, when we reached our usual turn, Nala decided she wanted to go a different way.

So we did.

It was only about 200m from where we normally walk, but suddenly there were more cars, different noises and a busy intersection ahead.
She stopped, sniffed the air and took it all in for a while.

I sat down with her, gave her a few treats and let her work it out in her own time.

Eventually, she decided that was enough and headed back towards what she knew.

To anyone driving past, it probably looked like a dog standing on the side of the road doing absolutely nothing.

To me, it was Nala choosing to explore her world a little bit more.

To everyone who voted “don’t be ridiculous”… honestly, same.

There was a time when I just picked up dogs, took them for a walk and brought them home.

Lately, there seems to be an extra step.

After Loxley’s emergency wash last week, Tilly clearly decided it was her turn.

Water? Straight in.
Dirt? Even better.
Regrets? Absolutely none.

Anyway… taking bets on who needs a wash next.

Loxley has expensive taste.
In things that smell deceased.

We bumped into one of his old dog walkers, who suggested a little beach spot. I’d been there with Jose before. Lovely splash, lovely walk, everyone left smelling alive.

Then I took Loxley.

He was almost upside down against a rock, having a glorious roll in some grass and weeds. We laughed. I filmed. Then he came closer and the laughter stopped.

Nothing there that I could see. Just a smell that had no business coming from a living animal.

There was no way I was taking him home wearing that. All the car windows down and off to find a DIY dog wash.

Three shampoos, conditioner and perfume later, I could STILL smell it. Although by then I’d managed to get it all over myself, so possibly I was the problem.

What’s the foulest thing your dog has ever rolled in? Because I still need answers.

The dogs know we’re going somewhere the second the packing starts. Unfortunately, knowing does not translate into helping.

I love having them here with us. Watching them explore somewhere new, sniff absolutely everything and still choose to sit right on top of me when there’s an entire campsite available.

There’s a fair bit to remember when you bring your dogs camping, so I’ve made you a free checklist to make the packing a little easier.

It covers their everyday essentials, the things that are easy to forget, and what to watch out for during an Australian spring. Ticks, snakes, grass seeds, warm days and having a plan if something goes wrong.

Print it, tick it off and leave it with your camping gear for next time.

You’ll find it through this link https://tr.ee/p7ykdBuVCN

Send this to whoever’s in charge of packing. We all know the dogs aren’t doing it.

HAPPY 2nd BIRTHDAY, ARLO 🎂

Arlo, a ridgeback of absolutely monstrous proportions… and one of the biggest sooks you’ll ever meet.

Do not let the size fool you. This enormous specimen has feelings. Lots of them. And if nail clipping is involved, those feelings become particularly strong.

He’s also a professional remote-control destroyer. Before leaving Arlo home alone, the TV and aircon remotes must be safely relocated to the table. Forget, and you may return to significantly fewer buttons than you left with.

On walks, Arlo is basically a nose with legs. He has a serious sniff drive and likes to thoroughly investigate whatever invisible crime scene has appeared on the footpath that day.

Then there’s the other great Arlo mystery: the poo. 💩
With possibly the most sensitive stomach known to dogkind, you genuinely never know what you’re getting. Every walk comes with an element of suspense.

One of my favourite Arlo things, though, is that he knows my voice. During a home visit he was fast asleep while I was going through one of our walk videos to send to his mum. The second he heard me talking in the video, he shot awake and jumped up thinking it was time for another walk. 😂 His mum has noticed it too. Apparently my voice now means GET UP, WE’RE GOING SOMEWHERE.

Happy Birthday to my giant, sniffy, sensitive-stomached sook. 🥳

May the sniffs be plentiful, the treats agree with your stomach, the nail clippers stay FAR away and all remotes remain safely out of reach.

Had a very lazy day at camp with these two today and spent far too much time watching them.

They really are the strangest little pair.

Happy came to us as a foster after we lost Ella.
We weren't ready for another dog and had absolutely no intention of keeping her.

Franklin had met plenty of other dogs by then and couldn't have cared less.
Then, on Happy's first night, we put her in her crate for bed and Franklin climbed in with her and refused to get out.

That should probably have told us how this was going to end.

Now, they're pretty much opposites in every possible way.

Franklin loves the car. Happy gets spectacularly carsick.
Franklin loves water. Happy absolutely does not.
Happy would live permanently attached to someone if she could. Franklin likes affection strictly on Franklin's schedule.

But underneath all the funny differences, they genuinely seem to help each other.

Franklin has always struggled with being alone. Happy gives him company, and she's brought play back out of him again.
Happy worries about the world a little more. She watches Franklin when she isn't sure, and sometimes seeing him completely unfazed gives her just enough confidence to give something a go.

Of course, they also teach each other absolute rubbish.

Franklin taught Happy to yell at me at meal time. Happy reacts to a dog on a walk and Franklin, who normally couldn't give two sh*ts about another dog, suddenly decides he too has concerns.

They both have their quirks.
They definitely don't magically fix each other.
But for two dogs who are nothing alike, they seem to understand what the other one needs.

And judging by these two today, I think Franklin chose his foster fail before we did. ❤️

Started this for Oliver.

Ended up needing to find just one more.

Yeah… we’ll take more of this.
