📆 It’s that time of year when we refresh our list for new adopters and foster carers.

For 2026-27, we’re again looking for the people who truly understand what a schnauzer needs to feel safe, supported and loved.

Every schnauzer who comes into our care arrives with their own story. Some need time to decompress, some need structure and boundaries, and some simply need a patient human who sees past the rough edges. When the right person steps in, these dogs transform — and it’s one of the most rewarding things you’ll ever be part of 💖

We’re especially hoping to hear from people who can offer:
✅ Breed experience or a willingness to learn their quirks with our guidance
✅ Work from home, or flexible lifestyle and active retirees who are at home more than out
✅ Schnauzer‑safe homes — fully fenced, secure, with space to explore
✅ Other friendly pets who can model calm behaviour (or a no other dog home)
✅ People who aren’t afraid to put in the work with a dog who isn’t “perfect” yet
❤️ A caring nature, time, patience and long‑term commitment

For foster carers, we’re also looking for:
✔️Free time to help a dog settle and decompress and manage their needs
✔️A reliable vehicle for vet and/or grooming appointments
✔️A quiet and calm, safe home environment
✔️Preferably no young children and good availability - we often get little notice and need pre-approved homes we can call on.

Ever notice how one bad, face-to-face interaction can ruin your dog’s mood for the entire day? 🛑

You’ve spent months perfecting their leash manners, only for an un-vetted encounter to send everyone's adrenaline through the roof. 🙄

❓When name calling needs to be re-thought?

Your dog knows their name.
That might be the problem.

"He's ignoring his name."
But what have we taught their name actually means?

Sometimes it means

Stop that.

Come here.

Leave it.

What have you got?

Move away from that.

Pay attention.

Over time, a name can stop being a simple attention cue and become a prediction of whatever comes next.

Is their name used as an interruption, to vent your disappointment or does it add pressure?

If so, it's not surprising that some dogs become less enthusiastic about responding.

The issue isn't always that they don't know their name.
Sometimes they've learned all too well that their name predicts things they'd rather avoid.

Every time we say a dog's name, we're teaching them what it means.

So when your dog hears their name.

A great read in these difficult times for many 😔

Some people are holding onto their dogs by a thread.
And we're arguing about blueberries.

Now isn't the time to shame people for feeding their dog the only way they financially can.

If some rice needs to be added to bulk a meal out because there simply isn't enough food, then that's where some people are right now.

A perfect raw diet served in a beautiful bowl with blackberries, green-lipped mussels and salmon oil might look great on social media.

But for some people, it feels like a slap in the face, over and over again.

They don't know you're already skipping meals yourself.

They’ve no idea you're juggling rent, power, groceries, fuel and a dozen other bills while trying to keep your dog fed too.

Being told "if you cared, you'd find a way" is SO easy when you're not the one standing in the supermarket trying to figure out how on earth you can get the whole family fed for the week when your bank app says seventeen dollars.

Let's be real.

People are surrendering their dogs because they can no longer afford to keep them.

Others are doing everything they can not to.

They're behind on the mortgage.
Behind on the rent.
Putting off things they really need.
Living in cold houses because the power bill has become yet another thing to worry about.
Answering the phone?
Well, you don’t really do that anymore because you know it’s someone wanting money that you just don't have.

And through all of this.
Day in and day out.
People are trying to keep their dog.

Because their dog is family.

Their dog that sleeps on their bed, snuggles and snores.
Their dog that got them through the divorce.
Their dog that sat beside them when life just fell apart.

Their dog was there in those moments when nobody else was.

People are clawing and scraping to hold onto that relationship.

And while they're doing everything they can to keep their dog in their home, they're being told they aren't good enough because they just can't afford someone else's version of the perfect diet.

Perspective matters.
Of course nutrition matters.
And yup, we should feed the best diet we reasonably can.

But right now.
In these economic times.
A dog eating a less-than-perfect diet in a loving home is often in a far, far better position than a dog that loses that home altogether.

And for many families, that's not a hypothetical.
That's the very decision they're trying desperately not to make.

Seizures are one of the most common neurological conditions in dogs.

Do you know how to recognise one, and what to do if it happens?

🚨 Signs your dog may be having a seizure include:

• Paddling or thrashing of the legs
• Stiff or rigid limbs
• Violent shaking or tremors
• Jaw chomping or foaming
• Muscle twitching
• Loss of consciousness
• Loss of bladder or bowel control
• Disorientation or confusion afterwards
• Heavy panting or distressed vocalisation

If your pet experiences a seizure, seek emergency veterinary care as soon as possible.
