Every morning, my dogs start their day with a solid hour of meditation at the park. Meditation and prayer are widely accepted as beneficial for humans, but, naturally, they’re even more beneficial for dogs. Don’t take that with a grain of salt or research the claim, just believe me when I say it.

The ability to go deep within and become one with the life force that surrounds them is a skill that needs to be refined over time. At first, the dogs have absolutely no idea why they’re being made to sit through it. Confusion, resistance, and the occasional existential crisis are all part of the process. But give it a little while, and suddenly you’ll find yourself able to have deep philosophical conversations with your dog that bring you closer to universal truths than you ever thought possible. Certainly more so than if you’d wasted your time doing something pointless, like retrieving, tracking or letting them run around like animals.

Now, as soon as Bob and Loco hear me start the sacred chant “Om” or “Aum,” (depending on how aligned we’re feeling that day) they know it’s time to lock in, suffocate their egos, and transcend the limitations of their physical form. It’s honestly incredible to watch, and it does wonders for my self esteem by making dogs do something completely unnatural and then calling it connection.

If you’ve been sleeping on getting your dog trained in the ancient art of meditation, or didn’t even know that you could, I seriously question your humanity and love for your dog.

Nissa (the Malinois) is still a work in progress.

Also, this is not satire or sarcasm…

Today I found out, that when Bob grows up, he wants to be a hot blooded, bonafide, treein’ C**n Hound.

Positive-only training sounds nice in theory, but the real world isn’t a controlled environment. Dogs need clear guidance, boundaries, and leadership so they understand how to handle pressure, distractions, and real-life situations. Training that only hopes for cooperation, without ever teaching the dog how to handle correction or responsibility, often leaves dogs confused and owners frustrated. If we truly care about our dogs, we should prepare them for the world they actually live in — not the one we wish existed.

I’ll be honest – Despite it not being my favourite niche area or discipline of dog training, the thing that I know the absolute most about, and have had the most experience with is training dogs and handlers for work in protection. Whether that has been in counter terrorism and combat assault dogs, or an average family guard dog with owners who are prepared to go the distance and do what is required at every stage of the dog’s development, I have helped build many relationships between dog and handler, and ensured both are equipped for the challenges that they may face together. Many people I talk to who enquire about training their dog for protection work or as a home guardian, are often shocked when they find out the level of detail and commitment that is non-negotiable for their goals to be achieved, not to mention the financial commitment it also poses across the initial development and life of the dog. This video hopes to manage people’s expectations surrounding this subject, and act as a first step in helping them understand, or make a decision that is in alignment with their expectations.

If your dog blows you off when you call them, there’s a good chance you’ve accidentally taught them that coming back to you is a bad deal. Too many recalls end in the fun stopping, the leash going on, or the dog getting told off, so they learn pretty quickly that ignoring you pays better. In this short video I talk about the common mistakes people make with recall and how to start flipping it around so your dog actually wants to come back to you.

Dog parks are sold as the easy answer for exercise and socialisation, but for a lot of dogs they are actually a fast track to bad habits, stress, and avoidable problems. In this Home Truths video I talk about why so many issues start there, what people misunderstand about “socialising” dogs, and how good intentions can still lead to rough outcomes. This isn’t about judging owners. It’s about helping you make better choices for your dog’s safety, confidence, and training long term.

Breed Truths and this one is all about the German Shorthaired Pointer. Incredible athletes, insanely versatile, and packed full of drive, these dogs are not built for a quiet life on the couch. They are smart, intense, and loyal, but they need real work, real structure, and real outlets or they will absolutely invent their own. I’m also a proud owner of one, so this comes from real life, not just theory. In this short video I talk about what makes GSPs amazing, what makes them challenging, and who they are actually suited for, so people can make better choices for the dog and for themselves.

A lot of people don’t properly understand the relationship between leash pressure and why their dogs pull on the lead, and in the ten years that I’ve been training dogs professionally, the number one item at the top of most people’s list of things that they would like to change about life with their dog is poor leash manners. The breakthrough always comes from properly understanding why it happens, and letting go the story of what we tell ourselves about why we think it’s happening.

Too many people apply ‘papier mâché’ solutions to the problems that they have with their dogs. They confuse management and the use of certain tools with actually training their dogs, in an effort to help the dog understand and perform better at the things that they expect or want their dog to do. Tools have their place in certain contexts and scenarios, but they should never be the overall solution to a problem that someone faces with their dog.

If there were ever a breed of dog that you could train to rob a bank, you could make a solid case for that breed being the Border Collie. A beautiful, intelligent and super motivated dog that fits beautifully into life as a family pet if the environment is right. But, with super intelligence and a naturally intense nature, the level of responsibility by the handler is one that cannot be underestimated.

Consistency beats intensity 99 times out of 100. Big bursts of effort followed by long gaps don’t change much. Small, repeatable actions done every day are what actually reshape behaviour, for dogs and for people. This Training Truth is about building habits that stick instead of chasing quick fixes.
