🐾 “Do you have puppies at the moment?”
It sounds like a simple question.
But when you’re choosing a British Bulldog puppy, there are so many more important questions behind it. ❤️

🧬 Health testing — what has actually been tested, and why?
🧠 Temperament — what are the parents like to live with?
🐶 Socialisation — how are the puppies being raised during those critical first weeks?
📚 Breeder education — does the breeder understand the breed, its health challenges and the decisions behind their breeding program?
🤝 Breeder support — will they still be there after your puppy goes home?
🔎 Research the breed. Research the breeder. Ask questions.
Because the puppy you fall in love with in a photo may be with your family for the next 10+ years.
A beautiful picture might catch your attention.
But a picture is not the WHOLE picture. 🐾

❤️ ONE OF THE BEST THINGS YOU CAN DO FOR YOUR BULLDOG?
Keep them lean.

We spend a lot of time talking about genetics and the choices breeders can make.
But once that puppy goes home, owners become an incredibly important part of the health equation too. 🫶
And maintaining a healthy body condition is one of those things you can influence.
Extra weight means extra work for a Bulldog's body — and research has also found obesity to be associated with BOAS. �

The important bit?
⚖️ Don't get hung up on a number on the scales.
Two Bulldogs can weigh exactly the same and have very different body condition.
Look at the dog in front of you.
❤️ Healthy body condition.
🐾 Appropriate exercise.
🥩 Appropriate nutrition.
👀 Regularly reassess as they grow and age.
We can't control every health risk our Bulldogs may face.
But where we can make a difference, we should.
That's what this series is all about.

❤️ WHAT DOES A HEALTHIER BULLDOG ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?

When people talk about Bulldog health, it's easy to get caught up in tests, scores, genetics, anatomy and everything that could go wrong.
But sometimes we need to remember why we're doing all of this.

For us, a healthier Bulldog is one that gets to simply...
🐾 Move comfortably.
🫁 Breathe comfortably.
😴 Sleep comfortably.
🌡️ Cope with everyday life.
❤️ And enjoy being a dog.
That's it.
We're not chasing perfection. It doesn't exist.
We're trying to make better choices.
🧬 Better-informed breeding choices.
📚 Better-informed ownership.
🩺 Better awareness of what isn't “just normal for a Bulldog.”
Because British Bulldogs are a higher-risk breed. We openly acknowledge that.
But higher risk doesn't mean we stop trying to improve their outcomes.
Research continues to support moving away from exaggerated conformation and using evidence-based breeding and health strategies to improve Bulldog welfare.
Every generation gives us another opportunity to learn.
Every owner we educate gives us another opportunity to reduce avoidable risk.
Every better decision matters.
And underneath all the science, that's really what our Breeding for Health program and the HBA Knowledge Series are about.

🫶 WHY DO WE DO THE HBA KNOWLEDGE SERIES?
Because underneath all the research, testing, genetics and conversations about health...
there's a Bulldog. ❤️
And we want that Bulldog to have the best chance possible at a long, comfortable and happy life.
We love this breed deeply. And loving them means being honest about them.

🐾 British Bulldogs are a higher-risk breed.
We don't hide from that.
But we also don't believe that means we simply accept poor health as “just part of being a Bulldog.”
We believe we can do better.
🧬 Breeders can make better-informed breeding choices.
📚 Owners can make better-informed decisions.
🌡️ We can reduce avoidable environmental risks.
🩺 We can recognise problems earlier.
❤️ And together, we can give more Bulldogs a better chance at a better quality of life.
That's why we share what we're learning.
Not to pretend we have all the answers.
We don't.
Not to tell everyone else they're doing it wrong.
That's not the point.
We share it because knowledge gives us the opportunity to make better choices.
And sometimes, lots of better choices made over a Bulldog's lifetime can make a very real difference.
