Another new resident slithered into the Shed Happens household last night… and good lord, isn't he a stunner?! 😍
Meet Fenrir, our approximately 7ft Jungle Python.
He's a BIG boy, he's absolutely gorgeous, and he's already made quite the impression. 😂
Unfortunately, underneath those beautiful black and gold scales is a boy who has needed some help. Fenrir has significant areas of damaged skin along his body which will need proper assessment, treatment and plenty of time to heal.
For now, he's safe. He's warm. He's being closely monitored, and we'll be getting a proper plan in place for him and those wounds. 💚
He's another example of why Shed Happens exists — sometimes these animals just need someone willing to say “Yep, we'll help.”
And apparently I'm completely incapable of saying no to a giant gorgeous python. 😂
Also, while we're making introductions, we have a little name change!
Our beautiful girl previously introduced as Sigyn/Koda will now officially be known as FREYA. 💚
So we now have Freya & Fenrir in the Shed Happens family… and I'm beginning to suspect we've accidentally started a Norse mythology reptile collection. 😂

🐍🦎💚 INCOMING… 38 REPTILES! 💚🦎🐍

Well… Shed Happens is about to get a WHOLE lot busier. 😂

This weekend we will be welcoming 38 reptiles into Shed Happens care!

Yep. THIRTY-EIGHT. 😳

It's a mixture of lizards — predominantly geckos — and Children's Pythons, all needing somewhere safe to land before we can work out what comes next for each of them.

I am genuinely beyond overjoyed that I'm in a position where I can help people in this way.

One of the biggest reasons I started Shed Happens was to give people somewhere they could turn when they realised they could no longer provide what their reptiles needed — before those animals had to suffer because of it.

And ultimately, it's about making sure every single animal that comes through our doors gets the best treatment, care and future that we can possibly give them. 💚

But I'm going to need some help with this one!

We currently have 7 reptiles already in Shed Happens care — and there are actually a few little faces you haven't met yet, so keep an eye on the page because more introductions are coming later today! 👀😂

Add another 38 this weekend and suddenly we're looking at 45 reptiles in our care.

And 45 little mouths, enclosures and individual sets of needs add up VERY quickly. 😅

Every one of these new arrivals will need to be individually assessed, appropriately quarantined and receive veterinary assessment before we even begin considering rehoming.

We're not going to rush them out the door.

First we make sure they're safe.

Then we make sure they're healthy.

Then, when they're ready, we find them the right home. 🐍🦎💚

So this is where I'm asking our little Shed Happens community for some help.

Whether it's $1 or $5 — it helps.

If you can't donate money but have appropriate reptile supplies sitting around that you no longer need — that helps too!

We're going to need things like appropriate enclosures, hides, water bowls, heating and lighting equipment, thermostats, substrate, cleaning supplies and other reptile accessories.

At this stage, anything that helps us safely house and care for these guys is incredibly appreciated.

I will continue putting everything I can into these animals, but with 7 already here and another 38 arriving, this is getting bigger than something I can financially carry completely on my own.

And that's okay — because Shed Happens was never supposed to just be about me helping reptiles.

I'd love for it to become a little community of people helping them together. 💚

There's one more little face temporarily joining the Shed Happens household… although this distinguished gentleman is very much already spoken for. 😂
Meet Spike!
Spike belongs to one of our amazing team members, Crystal, who has been taking incredible care of him after purchasing him from an elderly lady who had been living in a nursing home with this old boy.
Spike is approximately 13 years old, and let me tell you…
He has absolutely perfected the Bearded Dragon art of sassy side-eye, judgement and looking at you like every decision you've ever made has personally disappointed him. 😂
Unfortunately, our elderly gentleman has gotten himself into a little bit of trouble.
Since coming to live with Crystal, Spike was finally moved into an appropriately sized enclosure.
Apparently, after discovering that he suddenly had all this room for activities, Spike decided that ZOOMIES WERE 1000% CALLED FOR. 🏃‍♂️💨🦎
Sir.
You are approximately 13.
Please act accordingly. 😂
Unfortunately, his newfound enthusiasm resulted in a break in his tail and a small wound, which has developed an infection.
Thankfully, there is some really good news!
He's been assessed and the infection hasn't reached the bone, so at this stage there is no need to amputate his tail. 🙌💚
Instead, our little old man needs antibiotics and topical cream while everything heals.
He'll also be on a strict, appropriately balanced diet — something Crystal is already doing beautifully — with a few additional supplements to help address what he's lacking and get him to where he needs to be to thrive, not just get by.
So for the moment, Spike is having himself a little Shed Happens holiday while we help get him back on track. 💚

I do want to make one thing really clear with Spike's story though.
Temporary care like this is not a service Shed Happens offers to the general public.
Spike is receiving temporary care because he belongs to one of our own team members, Crystal, who has already been providing him with appropriate care and actively addressing his needs. We're simply working together as a team to give the old boy what he needs while he recovers.
Shed Happens will absolutely help people who are struggling, and there will never be judgement towards someone who recognises they can no longer provide what their reptile needs and chooses to surrender them.
However, Shed Happens is not a free veterinary treatment or boarding service.
I don't want there to ever be an expectation that an animal can come into our care after being neglected, abused, harmed or left without necessary treatment, have Shed Happens take responsibility for their veterinary care and rehabilitation, and then simply be demanded back once they're healthy again.
Our priority will always be the welfare of the animal.
Spike's situation is different. He has a committed owner who is already doing the right things for him, and this is simply our little team helping one another. 💚
So everyone say hello to Spike — our approximately 13-year-old, judgemental, side-eyeing, geriatric zoomies champion. 😂🦎

🦎💚 MEET NEMO — SH003 💚🦎
It's time to introduce another little member of the Shed Happens family…
Meet Nemo — SH003. 💚
Nemo is a Blue-tongued Lizard who was surrendered into care simply because his previous owners no longer wanted him.
He wasn't surrendered because of his appearance or because anyone knew just how much was actually going on with him.
In fact, after three years of ownership, this little dude didn't even have a name.
That lasted approximately five minutes in our house. 😂
My son took one look at him and affectionately named him Nemo, and honestly… it suits him perfectly. 🥹💚
At first glance, it's pretty obvious Nemo is a little different. He's missing most of his toes and a significant portion of his tail.
But after his veterinary assessment yesterday, we discovered there's quite a bit more going on beneath the surface.
Our little man has an ulcerated mouth, is deficient in vitamins D, B and C, and the vet also discovered evidence of a previous spinal fracture which has thankfully healed.
Then, of course, there are those little feet.
Most of his toes are gone, along with part of his tail.
This little dude has clearly had a rough run.
The good news is that he's here now, we've got a treatment plan, and we can start giving his body what it needs. 💚
Nemo will need antibiotics, a much better and appropriately balanced diet, and plenty of good old-fashioned TLC while we work on getting him stronger and healthier.
And despite everything?
He's an absolute little sweetheart. 🥹
This is also why veterinary assessments are so important for the animals coming through Shed Happens.
Sometimes what you can see on the outside is only a tiny part of the story.
Nemo wasn't surrendered because he was sick. Nobody handed him over saying "this animal needs medical treatment."
He simply needed somewhere else to go.
But getting him assessed meant we now know what this little guy actually needs — and we can do something about it.
So, after three years without one…
Welcome to your new chapter, Nemo. 🦎💚
You've got a name now.
You've got a treatment plan.
And you've got people in your corner.

🐍💚 SH002: MEET SIGIN — OUR NEWEST SHED HAPPENS GIRL 💚🐍
Okay… when I said reptiles have a habit of finding their way into my life, apparently we've decided to supersize them now. 😂
I'd like everyone to meet Sigin, formerly known as Koda, and the newest addition to the Shed Happens family.
And when I say she's a big girl, I mean BIG girl.
Sigin is an absolutely stunning 7-foot Jungle Python weighing in at almost 4kg! 😳🐍
Unfortunately, the reason this beautiful girl has come into care isn't quite as exciting.
Sigin has a second-degree burn on her back, caused by repeated contact with the heat light in her previous enclosure.
Her wound has now been debrided, and thankfully, despite how nasty it looks, her treatment plan from here is relatively straightforward. She requires antibiotics and topical cream while the wound heals, along with plenty of monitoring and good husbandry while her body does the rest. 💚
And honestly?
She is an absolute pleasure to have in care.
For a snake of her size, and considering everything she's currently having done to her, she has been such a beautiful girl to work with. And just LOOK at her. 😍
She's absolutely stunning.
There's also a little twist with this one…
Sigin won't actually be staying with me permanently. Skott is keeping her, but apparently we've entered into some sort of reptile shared-custody arrangement because we're co-parenting her. 😂
So while she might eventually live with Dad, I'm absolutely claiming joint custody. 🤣🐍
For now, though, the priority is getting that burn healed, keeping her comfortable and making sure this gorgeous girl gets everything she needs.
And this is also exactly why Shed Happens exists.
Sometimes an animal doesn't need judgement or blame attached to its story.
It just needs help.
So…

🐍💚 SILVER UPDATE — HE ATE!! 💚🐍
Well… we have discovered something rather important about Silver.
Silver is apparently false advertising. 😂
Our beautiful boy has FINALLY shed, and underneath all of that old, dull, dehydrated skin is a gorgeous brown boy!
Even better, his eye caps have finally come away — and unfortunately we discovered that there appeared to be multiple layers of retained eye caps. 😭 Underneath them, though, we finally got to see his beautiful brown eyes!
Now that the retained shed and eye caps are gone, we can get a much better idea of how his eyes are functioning and continue monitoring him as he recovers.
But the BIGGEST news…
SILVER ATE!!! 🎉🎉🎉
And apparently one fuzzy wasn't enough for Mr Hungry Pants because he ate TWO fuzzy mice! 😂🐁🐁
Considering how unwell Silver was when he arrived — severely dehydrated and chronically malnourished, with pneumonia, myocarditis, a vitamin C deficiency and an infected ulcer in his mouth — seeing him voluntarily take food is such an exciting step forward.
He's still undergoing treatment and he still has a road ahead of him, so we're absolutely not declaring victory just yet. But every little milestone matters.
Hydrated. ✅
Shed. ✅
Eye caps OFF. ✅
Beautiful brown eyes revealed. 🤎
TWO FUZZIES IN THE BELLY. ✅✅

And yes… despite discovering that he is significantly less silver than advertised, Silver is absolutely keeping his name. 😂

🐍💚 SHED HAPPENS WISHLIST 💚🐍

As Shed Happens begins taking reptiles into care, we're slowly building up our collection of equipment and supplies so we're ready when the next reptile needs us.

And if Silver has taught us anything already… sometimes there isn't much warning. 😅🐍

Reptiles coming into rescue can arrive with completely different needs — different temperatures, UV requirements, substrates, enclosure styles, humidity levels and medical needs. Having supplies already available means we can get them safely set up straight away, rather than scrambling to find everything after they arrive.

So we've put together a wishlist of things that are ALWAYS useful at Shed Happens. 💚

We're absolutely not asking anyone to go out and buy brand-new equipment.

Have you upgraded an enclosure and have an old hide sitting in the garage?

A spare dome?

Water bowl your reptile outgrew?

Branches, cork, thermostats, heat mats, UV fixtures or other reptile equipment gathering dust?

We can probably use it! 😂

New or second-hand donations are incredibly appreciated, provided they're safe and able to be appropriately cleaned and disinfected.

Every donated item means more of our funds can go directly towards things like veterinary treatment, medications and emergency care when a reptile like Silver comes through our doors.

There's no donation too small — sometimes that random hide sitting forgotten in your cupboard is exactly what our next little patient needs. 🥹💚

🐍💚 SILVER UPDATE — SH001 💚🐍

Yesterday we introduced you to Silver, the very first reptile to come into the care of Shed Happens.

After being collected from Bradbury on Sunday evening, Silver was driven directly back to our trusted veterinary team and admitted at 11:07pm, where he remained overnight and throughout the following day receiving assessment, supportive care and treatment.

Tonight, we finally have a clearer picture of just how unwell this beautiful little guy is.

Unfortunately, Silver's condition is significantly more serious than we initially understood.

Following veterinary assessment, Silver has been diagnosed with:

🫁 Pneumonia
❤️ Myocarditis — inflammation of the heart muscle
💚 Vitamin C deficiency
🦷 An active infected ulcer inside his mouth
💧 Severe dehydration
🐍 Significant malnutrition and underdevelopment

We have also been advised that Silver is considerably smaller than he should be and that his malnutrition is longstanding.

That's a lot for one little snake to be dealing with.

But here's the important part:

Silver is here. He's safe. And we're not giving up on him.

He has received intensive supportive care and hydration at the veterinary clinic and now begins the next stage of his recovery.

He'll require ongoing antibiotics, vitamin supplementation, carefully managed husbandry, nutrition, monitoring and plenty of time for his body to recover.

His treatment doesn't stop because the vet bills get bigger.

It doesn't stop because recovery might take longer than expected.

And it doesn't stop because his needs turned out to be far greater than anyone initially realised.

This is exactly why Shed Happens was created.

Silver's most recent carer recognised that he needed more help than she could financially continue to provide. Rather than allow him to go without the treatment he desperately needed, she reached out.

She gave us the opportunity to say:

“Okay. We'll take it from here.”

There is no shame in recognising when an animal's needs have become greater than you can manage.

Right now, our focus isn't on blame.

Our focus is Silver.

Getting the infection under control.
Supporting his little body.
Giving him the nutrition and husbandry he's been missing.
Helping him regain strength.
And giving him every opportunity to heal.

Silver has a long road ahead of him, but he doesn't have to walk it alone anymore.

SH001 is home. 💚

We'll continue sharing Silver's journey — the good days, the difficult ones, the tiny victories and hopefully some very big milestones.

Thank you to everyone who has already shown this little guy so much love.

🐍💚 MEET SILVER — SH001 💚🐍

We certainly didn't expect to be introducing our very first Shed Happens resident quite this quickly… but apparently shed happens. 😉

Meet Silver, the beautiful boy who has officially become Shed Happens Rescue #001.

Silver's journey to us is also the perfect example of why this service was created.

Silver was recently taken in by Crystal Elizabeth Nowlan who saw that he needed help and simply couldn't leave him behind.

She sought veterinary treatment for him and did everything she could to give him the chance he deserved. Unfortunately, it quickly became apparent that Silver required considerably more veterinary care and ongoing treatment than she could financially manage.

She was faced with an incredibly difficult situation.

She didn't want Silver to go without treatment.

She didn't want his life to end simply because she couldn't afford to continue his veterinary care.

And she didn't want to give up on him.

So she did something that can be incredibly difficult to do:

She asked for help.

💚 And we said yes.

Tonight, we travelled from Queanbeyan to Bradbury to collect Silver and bring him into our care.

After approximately three hours on the road in pouring rain, Silver was taken directly to a trusted veterinary team, where he is spending the night receiving the intensive supportive care he currently needs.

Tomorrow, we'll collect him and begin working through his ongoing treatment and recovery plan.

From this point forward, Silver's veterinary treatment, medication, appropriate housing, feeding, transport and recovery costs will be taken on by Shed Happens.

His previous carer doesn't owe us anything.

She doesn't need to feel guilty.

She got him out of a situation where he needed help, sought veterinary treatment, recognised when his needs had exceeded what she could provide and made sure he reached someone who could continue what she started.

That isn't giving up on an animal.

That's putting their welfare before your own feelings.

And THAT is exactly why Shed Happens exists.

🐍 Sometimes circumstances change.

💚 Sometimes the vet bill becomes too much.

🐍 Sometimes you take on an animal with the best intentions and discover their needs are far greater than you expected.

💚 Sometimes you simply need someone else to say:

“Okay. I'll take it from here.”

There is no shame in that.

Silver has a road ahead of him, but tonight he is safe, warm and exactly where he needs to be.

We'll share more about his condition and recovery as we learn more over the coming days.

For now…
