🎓 Build the Basics graduates! 🐾

Another group has officially made it through their four weeks of training, and I’m so proud of the progress these teams have made.

Over the course of the program, we worked on engagement, lead skills, settling, recall, working around distractions and, most importantly, building clearer communication between dog and owner.

It’s never about having a “perfect” dog by the end of four weeks. It’s about giving owners the skills to understand their dog, communicate more clearly and keep building on their training long after class finishes.

Watching each team become more confident together is one of my favourite parts of running these classes. ❤️

Training happens everywhere. 🌊🐾

Goose’s Walk & Train took us out onto the jetty, which gave us a brilliant little confidence-building opportunity.

Walking over the bridge and out onto the jetty meant feeling the movement underneath his feet, while the motion of the waves and water below added another new experience to take in.

These kinds of everyday experiences can be such a valuable part of training. It’s not always about practising a specific behaviour — sometimes it’s simply about giving our dogs the opportunity to explore something new, work through it and realise they’re okay.

Goose handled it beautifully. ❤️

Walk & Trains aren’t just about walking nicely on lead. They’re also a chance to build confidence, explore new environments and give dogs positive real-world experiences along the way.

🐾 When your dog LOVES food… maybe a little too much 😂

Hooper is incredibly food motivated, which sounds like a trainer’s dream — until the food itself becomes part of the excitement!

For some dogs, bringing out treats immediately gets their brain switched on and ready to work. For others, it can send their arousal through the roof and suddenly we have frantic offering of behaviours, bouncing around and a dog who is technically very motivated… but not necessarily thinking clearly.

With Hooper, we’ve been working on finding that balance.

Rather than constantly feeding him through training, we’re looking for opportunities to reinforce calmer behaviour, slowing things down and helping him understand that food doesn’t always mean GO GO GO.

We’ve also been building his loose-lead walking, working alongside the pram, practising his place work and teaching him that sometimes the job is simply to settle and do nothing.

That last one can be surprisingly difficult for an energetic dog!

Training isn’t always about teaching more behaviours. Sometimes it’s about helping a dog learn when to switch off, regulate themselves and exist calmly alongside everything happening around them. 💛

My next Build the Basics group classes are now open for bookings!

🐕 Small groups — maximum 6 dogs

Across the four weeks, we’ll work on:

🌿 Real-world skills you can actually use outside of class

These classes are about more than teaching a few cues. We’re building clearer communication between you and your dog, helping them make better choices, and giving you practical skills you can continue using long after the course finishes.

Dogs work individually with their owners — this isn’t dog-to-dog socialisation — so we can focus on calm, productive training around other dogs and people.

Suitable for dogs approximately 6 months+, including dogs who may be a little excitable or mildly reactive around others.

🐾 Puppy training doesn’t have to look impressive to be important.

Little Lara has been working on her foundations, and at this age so much of our training is about helping her learn how to navigate the world around her.

We’ve been working on things like responding to leash pressure, following her handler, building engagement, redirecting puppy chewing and excitement, and reinforcing those lovely calm choices when they happen naturally.

One of the biggest things I encourage with puppies is keeping training short, simple and achievable. You don’t need a 30-minute training session — a few good repetitions while you’re moving through everyday life can go a long way.

It’s also easy to focus on what puppies are doing “wrong” because… well, puppies are very good at finding trouble 😂 But catching and reinforcing the behaviours you do like is just as important.

Lara is still only little and has plenty of learning ahead of her, but these early foundations are what we’ll continue building on as she grows. 💛

Okay Scout… show off. 😂👏

Sometimes you get one of those stretches on a walk where everything just comes together, and this was definitely one of them.

Beautiful day at Riverway, a lovely long path ahead of us, and Scout absolutely cruising along beside me. 🥰

We’ve been putting time into his walking skills and responsiveness, and I couldn’t resist getting the camera out when he settled into this gorgeous heel.

A heel like this isn’t something I expect a dog to maintain for an entire walk — there’s plenty of time for sniffing, exploring and just enjoying being a dog too. But being able to bring them in close and have them move with you like this when you need it is such a useful skill.

And when it looks this good… you enjoy it for a minute. 😂❤️

What an amazing weekend away attending the Play as the Way – Jay Jack seminar! 🐾

I genuinely enjoyed the entire weekend. I absolutely loved the way Jay explains things — breaking concepts down in a way that just makes sense, while giving you plenty to think about when it comes to play, communication and the relationship we build with our dogs.

There’s something so valuable about getting away, learning from other trainers and coming home with fresh ideas and a slightly different perspective.

Definitely a weekend well spent, and I’m looking forward to taking what I’ve learnt and putting it into practice with my own dogs and the teams I work with. 🧡🐕

Always learning, always growing.

Big dog, big personality… and learning that walks don’t need to be a full-body workout for the person holding the lead. 😂🐾

Maui has been working on his loose lead walking and learning to respond to much lighter guidance from his handler.

Because with a dog his size, pulling isn’t just inconvenient — it can make getting out for a walk genuinely difficult. So a big part of our work has been finding handling techniques that are practical for both Maui and his owner.

We’ve been working on slowing things down, responding to leash guidance, checking back in, changing direction when needed, and learning that he doesn’t need to charge towards everything that catches his attention.

We’ve also been building his ability to notice things happening around him without immediately needing to get involved — especially when excitement starts to take over that very large Great Dane/Bull Arab body. 😂

There’s still plenty for us to build on, but I love seeing those moments where everything clicks and Maui realises that working with the person on the other end of the lead actually makes the whole walk easier. ❤️

And yes… when your student is this big, good leash skills are VERY appreciated. 😂

Your reactive dog doesn’t have to pretend other dogs don’t exist. 👀

Zoey gave us some really nice opportunities to work around other dogs during one of our recent Walk & Trains, including spending some time near the dog park.

And I wasn’t asking her to stare at me and ignore everything happening around her.

She was allowed to look.

She was allowed to take in the information.

What I was interested in was what happened afterwards.

Could she notice another dog without becoming completely consumed by it? Could she disengage? Could she respond to me and move on?

For dogs who struggle with reactivity, those little moments can be a really big deal.

The goal isn’t necessarily a dog who never notices another dog again. For Zoey, I want to build her ability to see something she finds difficult or exciting, process it, and still be able to make her way back to me.

And she did such a lovely job of that here. 🥰
