Even with the overcast, gloomy, and almost rainy weather, the snakes are still definitely out and about.

Like this chonker found in the front parking lot of a commercial business in Maddington.

I’m still always surprised when we get calls for snakes in this area.
There is literally one sliver of bush/ creek that runs through it, and it’s crazy how it seemingly sustains quite a few snakes.

This one was super chill when I caught it, but - as always - was a little less friendly on release. But that’s the good part! 😅.

Taken across Tonkin Hwy to some old bush reserve, there really isn’t any other suitable spots for them to go. I found some good cover for it to hide out while it’s get its bearings, but not before it gave me some utterly perfect defensive display 😍
It looks scary, but I promise it’s just telling me to back off. And it worked! 😅

AND IT BEGINS…..

Yes folks.. it has officially begun. Snake season is now upon us. I’m sure you all aren’t as happy as we are 🤣.

This sweet little thing was found under some garden slabs in Glen Forrest this afternoon.
While it was a relatively easy catch, I noticed a bit of tail damage as I released it.
I’m actually unsure if it was damaged before or during the catch.
Thankfully, it is not a serious injury. While the tip will eventually drop off, it will not cause any long term effect to the snake.

Important info as always;

If you see a snake, DO NOT INTERFERE WITH IT. Call us, and let us take care of it for you.
ALWAYS stay watching it.

If you can see it, or if you move away from the area, how are we supposed to find it?

Yes, we do charge. Only $50. This covers our time, fuel and risk.

We aren’t always available, but we will endeavour to find someone who is.

ALWAYS STAY WATCHING IT. This bit is importantly ;)

Above all else, please stay safe. Be prepared - get snake bite bandages if you spend time in the bush, or live in snake prone areas. Make sure you know snake bite first aid.

Remember, snakes are not out to get people. They are legitimately more scared of you, than you are of them. We are potential predators to them, and they want nothing to do with us.
They will avoid us at all costs, and only strike when feeling threatened.
They do NOT chase people 😉

The more we can learn to live with this incredible native, ecologically important animals, the less snakes AND people will die.

Save our numbers, if you haven’t already.

We don't normally do this, but friends support friends businesses, right? I am also a dad, and Father's Day is almost here!

If you haven't seen them, The Remedy - Kalamunda is an amazing health and wellness space based in the heart of Kalamunda, operating since last year.

Direct from Hayley at The Remedy --
"80% of the men that come into the clinic fall asleep on the table within 15 minutes of their treatment session as opposed to around 30% of women. This tells us that men are not taking the time to recharge and rejuvenate and their bodies are heavily overstimulated.
We bundled a massage and spa session together for all the dads to enjoy. Send them our way and we will do the rest."

So apologies this is not our normal content, but if you're looking for last minute ideas, why not treat him to some self-care!? Speaking from experience, we can definitely benefit from it too ;)

CLOSE CALL!

Yet ANOTHER winter snake relocation, which takes this years tally to 4.
It may not sound like a lot, but for a city that gets too cold for reptiles to operate - generally -, this is a huge amount!

This unbelievable looker was found behind a large box in a Welshpool warehouse.
Not the first tiger snake we have relocated from this area over the years, but it is pretty rare.
Being built on top of swamp land, with a few pockets still thriving, it is understandable they can still be in the area.
This section of Welshpool is also right next to Roe Hwy, and Wattle Grove. Not too far from where I relocated the baby tiger a few weeks ago.
Luckily, I had a path to the otherwise of the hwy, and to a decent sized swamp with dense bush, and plenty of frogs- Tiger Snakes favourite snacky poos.
While being a generally relaxed snake, it was a bit more tired up on release, and took me by surprise a little. Although it looked - and felt - close, upon review, it was further away. Thankfully lol.

Stay safe folks. Snake season is approaching fast!

LIZARDS IN THE MATRIX

Well another winter time relocation today, for this tristis (aka Black Headed Monitor; aka Varanus tristis) that managed to get itself stuck inside a house in Bickley yesterday
The resident was having trouble encouraging it to make its own way out, so I stopped by to lend a hand.
After an exhausting 15 second drive to the house down the street, I found this poor dude huddled in a corner, absolutely freezing.

As we discussed in the last video, reptiles need heat to create energy to move and function.
This guy had none.
The tricky part was finding a spot with some sunlight to let him get some warmth so he could get energy to find a hidey hole.
After trying a couple spots, he decided to try and warn me off with a cool defensive display, AND THEN GOING ALL EXORCIST ON ME!

An insanely impressive example of flexibility of these lizards.

And it’s always appreciated when we can release these animals back onto the same property to keep them home ❤️

BUT DON’T REPTILES HIBERNATE?!

Actually, no. They brumate.
A topic we have covered previously, but what better reason to bring it up, than this SUPER FRIGGING ADORABLE baby Tiger Snake that popped up in Wattle Grove this afternoon.

So what does brumation mean?

It means animal that are ectothermic, like reptiles and even fish, slow right down in cooler temperatures. They require external heat sources to warm their bodies to have energy and function, but if they can’t get that, they essentially do very little. Heat is required for basic bodily functions like eating, digesting meals, moving, and even going to the toilet.

Given we have had a few sunny days this week, it’s not entirely surprising to see a snake this tiny on the move. Smaller animal requires much less heat.
Especially with tiger snakes being so cold tolerant.

As always, please do not attempt to handle wild snakes like you see in this video - especially the venomous ones.
I talk about the handling in the footage, but it is not something I like to do in the field.
Always be safe!

Hope you’re all keeping well in this chilly winter.

Enjoy the video!

COME CATCH A SNAKE WITH ME!

Welcome to my first video filmed using my Ray Ban Meta glasses - now you can see how we do what we do. How’s this for a POV!?

With some warmer days, we have had a few calls for snakes appearing.

But don’t snakes hibernate?

Actually, they brumate.
This means they do have periods of activity on sunny days, even in the cooler months.

With some gorgeous sunshine over the last few days, this months-old juvenile dugite went for a wander, but unfortunately came into contact with a gang of cats.
Luckily the residents did an amazing job of keeping an eye on the snake, keeping it contained, while also getting the cats inside.

A quick google of the best place to release it, and back into the bush it went.
Hopefully with enough energy to hide out until it gets its bearings.

Let me know your thoughts on this type of video format? Keen to know if you enjoy it ☺️

We often get calls about “baby snakes” that turn out to not be baby snakes. Such as this guy, a very commonly found Burton Legless Lizard.

Legless lizards are commonly mistaken for snakes given their lack of legs result in them moving like a snake. They are completely harmless and their fleshy tongues and tiny flaps for legs make them just the cutest lizards.
