Last week on Friday the 9th we celebrated our amazing nursing team at Eaglehawk Road and Epsom Vet Clinics! 🐾💙

Our Veterinary Nurses are the true heartbeat of our clinics. They do so much more than just hold paws. They are highly skilled professionals who act as anaesthetists, dental hygienists, phlebotomists, radiology technicians, and grief counselors, often all in the same shift!

​Behind the scenes, they are the ones closely monitoring your pets during surgery, providing endless cuddles during recovery, and working tirelessly to ensure everything in the clinic runs smoothly. Their dedication to the health and happiness of the patients is nothing short of inspiring.

Which plant is safe for your dog – azalea or snapdragon?

The snapdragon is safe and non-toxic for your dog! These beautiful garden flowers pose no poisoning risks if your dog sniffs, licks or lightly nibbles them 🐶

Every part of an azalea plant (including the leaves, flowers, stems and nectar) is very toxic to dogs! Azalea plants contain grayanotoxins, a powerful poison that causes severe heart, nerve and muscle problems. Even a tiny amount of an azalea is enough to make a dog very sick!

Signs of azalea toxicity usually start within 20 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion and include; drooling, vomiting, stomach pain, inappetence, weakness and trouble walking, shaking and change in heartrate.

Regular check-ups really can make a difference! ✨

Beautiful Evie came into the clinic for what her owner thought would be a routine check-up.

During her examination, our veterinarian noticed something that needed further investigation – and it turned out Evie required emergency surgery to remove a large mass on one of her ovaries.

Thankfully, because the issue was detected early, we were able to act quickly.

Evie is now back at home with her family, recovering and getting plenty of love 🩷

Evie’s story is a great reminder of why regular veterinary check-ups are so important. Out pets can be very good as hiding signs that something isn’t quite right, and sometimes a routine examination can uncover problems before they become much more serious.

We’re so happy to see Evie on the road to recovery!

Ever wondered what happens when your pet comes in for a dental clean? Tazzie the Kelpie came into our clinic and found out 🐶

A dental scale and polish is a great way to help keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy!

Here’s a quick look at the process:

🩺 Pre-dental check – Our veterinarian checks your pet’s overall health and mouth before the procedure.

🩸 Pre-anaesthesia blood test – We recommend that your pet has a pre-anaesthesia blood test if they are over 6 years old, or if they have any pre-existing health conditions that may affect their procedure. We do this by taking a small sample of blood and running the tests in house.

💤 Anaesthesia – Your pet is placed under general anaethesia, allowing us to safely and thoroughly examine and clean their teeth.

🩻 Dental assessment – Each tooth is carefully examined for signs of dental disease. Xrays are taken of your pet’s mouth so that the veterinarian can see what is going under underneath the visible tooth. If needed, extractions may be recommended.

🦷 Scaling – Special dental equipment is used to remove plaque and tartar from the teeth, including around the gumline.

🪥 Polishing – The teeth are polished to smooth the surface and help slow the build-up of plaque and tartar.

🧑‍⚕️ Recovery – Once their dental is complete, your pet is carefully monitored as they wake up from anaesthesia.

International Rabbit Day is a great opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of proper rabbit care and the needs of these wonderful little companions 🐰

Many people underestimate the amount of care it takes to look after a pet rabbit.

Rabbits require more than just food and a hutch – a healthy diet, plenty of space and enrichment, regular veterinary care, dental checks, and lots of love are all essential for their wellbeing.

Here are some fun rabbit facts for International Rabbit Day!
- A rabbit’s teeth never stop growing! They are worn down as the rabbit chews on their food, so they don’t get too long.
- Rabbits perform an athletic leap when they are happy – this is called a ‘binky’!
- Rabbits purr when they are relaxed, similar to a cat!
