⚠️ PARVOVIRUS IS IN OUR LOCAL AREA

Benalla and Wangaratta councils have recently shared alerts about confirmed cases of parvovirus in our region.

If your dog’s vaccinations aren’t up to date, now is the time to act.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that can survive in the environment for months and spreads easily through contaminated soil, grass, shoes, clothing and other dogs. It can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea, dehydration and, in many cases, can be fatal, particularly in puppies and unvaccinated dogs.

The good news? It’s preventable with vaccination.

To help keep your dog safe while reducing their exposure to public places, I’ve opened up extra home visit appointments over the coming weeks.

We’ve had reports of parvovirus cases in our local area, so now is a good time to make sure your dog’s vaccinations are up to date.

Parvovirus is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening disease, particularly for puppies and unvaccinated dogs. A simple vaccination can provide important protection.

If your dog is due for a booster, or you’re not sure whether they’re protected, I can come to you.

Canine Parvovirus has been detected in our community.

This highly contagious virus can make dogs very sick, especially puppies and unvaccinated dogs, and in some cases can result in death.

Help protect your pet:
✅ Keep vaccinations up to date
✅ Clean and disinfect areas where dogs have been
✅ Avoid contact with sick dogs
✅ Watch for signs of illness, including vomiting, diarrhoea, and lethargy
✅ Contact your vet if your dog becomes unwell

Most people don’t realise their dog is in discomfort - until much later.

I had a visit recently that’s stayed with me.

A lovely family had called me out because their dog just “wasn’t quite right anymore.” When I arrived, they told me they thought he was just slowing down with age.

But as we talked through things — how he was getting up, how much more he was sleeping, the little hesitations they’d noticed. It became clear he’d likely been dealing with discomfort for a while.

And then they said something I hear so often…
“We just thought it was old age.”

And the truth is, it’s not that they missed anything. It’s that no one had ever shown them what those early changes can actually mean.

Because these signs are often so subtle and our pets are incredibly good at hiding pain and just getting on with things.

By the time we notice something is “off,” they’ve often been quietly compensating for quite a while.

So I created something I wish every pet parent had earlier.

They’ve sat quietly in the car while I was on after-hours calls.
They’ve come along on long country drives to visit pets who needed help.
They’ve seen the early mornings, the late nights, and the emotional moments when families have to say goodbye to a much-loved pet.

They’ve seen the real side of veterinary life not just the puppies and kittens, but the compassion, responsibility, and privilege that comes with caring for animals and supporting the people who love them.

One of my daughters grew up around all of this and is now a mum herself and a veterinary nurse.

Another daughter is still at school, but she sometimes helps me during the holidays and already tells people she wants to be a veterinarian.

And my other daughter has chosen a completely different path. Our children don’t have to follow our footsteps to still grow up with the same values.

Watching them each find their own way reminds me how powerful it is for children to simply see what’s possible.

If there’s one thing I hope they’ve learnt along the way, it’s that kindness and compassion always matter.

On International Women’s Day, I’m grateful for the opportunity to do meaningful work and even more grateful that my daughters have grown up seeing that caring deeply is something to be proud of.

To the women raising daughters, mentoring young women, or quietly leading by example in their families and communities — today is for you too. 🤍🐾

The quiet drive back to their home… carrying what remains of a pet deeply loved. 🤍 🕊️

After the end of life visit, I will return gently delivering ashes back into the hands that once held them, into the home where they were loved every single day.

Today’s deliveries were a little different.
My son was behind the wheel on his L-plates, quietly chauffeuring me between homes. A gentle reminder that life continues moving forward, even while hearts are healing.

It is one of the most tender parts of my work.

During your pet’s peaceful farewell at home, I can take care of all cremation arrangements for you. So you don’t have to make phone calls or carry the weight of decisions while your heart is grieving.

Your pet is treated with dignity and respect every step of the way, and their return home is handled with the same gentleness as their goodbye.

“Does my pet really need that vaccine again?”

It’s a great question 🤍🐾

What is vaccine titre testing?

Vaccine titre testing is a blood test that checks whether your pet still has protective immunity from their previous vaccinations.

Instead of automatically giving a booster, the duration of immunity from previous vaccinations can be evaluated by a blood sample.

If they is sufficient immunity - they may not need that vaccine at this time.

If their immunity has dropped - we can vaccinate.

It doesn’t replace every vaccine (for example kennel cough) but is great for the core vaccines.

Can this be done at home?

Yes 🤍 with most pets.

I offer vaccine titre testing during my home visits. If your pet is comfortable having a small blood sample taken at home. Many dogs and cats find the experience far less stressful in their own familiar environment. 🤍🐾
