With the recent cold and rain passing through, snakes are starting to move and they’ll continue to be active when the weather permits.

While temperatures are warm, it’s important to stay aware:
• Watch where you step
• Keep lawns trimmed and yards free of long grass and debris
• Never attempt to handle a snake yourself

If a snake turns up where it shouldn’t be, contact a professional snake catcher to ensure everyone stays safe — including the snake.

‼️If you need a snake relocated send us a message and one of our staff will respond as soon as possible.‼️

Eastern brown snakes often get a bad rap — but is it really deserved?

While it’s true they are the second most venomous snake in the world and are responsible for more human fatalities in Australia than any other species, the reality is that humans are usually the ones at fault. Research shows that around 90% of bites occur when people try to interfere with a snake — either attempting to move it on or kill it.

Eastern browns are highly alert and intelligent animals. If they believe they can escape safely, they will almost always choose to do so rather than stand their ground. The snake pictured below felt threatened by my presence and camera, but the moment I stepped back and gave it space, it calmly moved off on its own.

If you have a snake in Armidale that needs professional relocation, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

A carpet python (Morelia spilota) was safely relocated from a residential property and released into suitable nearby habitat. Carpet pythons are non-venomous native Australian snakes and play an important role in local ecosystems by helping control populations of rodents and other small animals.

• Carpet pythons can grow 2–4 metres long, depending on the subspecies.
• They are ambush predators, using constriction rather than venom to subdue prey.
• As ectotherms, they rely on external heat sources to regulate body temperature.
• These snakes are protected wildlife under Australian law.

If you encounter a snake that needs relocation, it’s best to keep your distance and contact a professional snake catcher to ensure both public safety and the wellbeing of native wildlife.

A tub full of newborn red-bellied black snakes.
At this time of year many people assume snakes are hatching from eggs but red-bellied black snakes are different. They give live birth, producing litters that can range from a handful to over 40 babies at once.

These young snakes are born fully formed, independent, and venomous from day one, but like adults they are generally shy and prefer to avoid people whenever possible. Red bellies play an important role in the ecosystem by controlling prey species and keeping the balance in our local environment.

With warmer weather and increased snake activity, it’s important to stay aware watch where you step, keep yards clear of long grass and debris, and never attempt to handle a snake yourself. If a snake turns up where it shouldn’t be, always contact a professional snake catcher so everyone stays safe including the snake.

Marsh Snake / Black-bellied Swamp Snake 🖤
(Hemiaspis signata)

This little marsh snake is curled tightly into a ball — a defensive posture used when it feels threatened. Rather than striking, it tucks its head in to protect itself, relying on camouflage and stillness to avoid danger.

Despite the intimidating name, the black-bellied swamp snake is mildly venomous but not dangerous to humans. Its venom is designed for small prey like frogs and skinks, not people. These snakes are shy, secretive, and rarely seen, spending most of their time hidden in wetlands, swamps, and grassy waterways.
