Genius at work

One of the things people love most about Border Collies is their remarkable mind. They notice patterns, learn quickly, and often seem to be thinking two steps ahead. But intelligence in this breed isn’t just about learning tricks — it’s about their ability to focus, solve problems, respond to cues, and work in partnership with a handler. At Belhaven, we admire that brilliance, but we also respect it. A clever dog still needs guidance, boundaries, and the right outlets. Intelligence without purpose can become frustration, and frustration often shows up as behaviours people weren’t expecting. This is why we place such importance on suitable homes, thoughtful raising, and early foundation work. A Border Collie’s mind is one of their greatest gifts — and it deserves to be nurtured, not underestimated.

Five things people underestimate about Border Collies

People often see the beauty, the athleticism, and the brains of a Border Collie — but there’s so much more to understand about what life with one really looks like. They are incredibly perceptive, they can be sensitive to their environment, they notice changes quickly, and many thrive when life has predictability and purpose. A walk alone is rarely enough for this breed; their minds need work as much as their bodies do. They are also not all the same — lines, temperaments, drives, and upbringing matter enormously. At Belhaven, we want people to fall in love with the whole dog, not just the idea of the breed. The more honestly we talk about their needs, the more likely we are to see Border Collies placed in homes where they can genuinely flourish.

Is a Border Collie right for you?

A Border Collie can be one of the most rewarding dogs you’ll ever share your life with — but they are not the right fit for every home, and that’s okay.
At Belhaven, we believe one of the kindest things a breeder can do is be honest about the breed.
These dogs are bright, observant, and deeply connected to their people. While they are traditionally a working breed, we don’t breed specifically for working homes — and some of our dogs are quite happy to switch off and enjoy life as part of the family (yes, even the occasional couch potato).
But it’s important to understand… they are still a working breed at heart.
That means they thrive with:
✔️ Mental stimulation
✔️ Structure
✔️ Engagement
✔️ Connection with their people
They are not a “set and forget” dog.
Even the more laid-back individuals still need purpose, guidance, and an environment where their minds are engaged. Without that, their intelligence and instincts can quickly turn into frustration or unwanted behaviours, as this breed is naturally wired for problem-solving and activity.
If you love learning, movement, routine, and partnership, a Border Collie may be your perfect match.
If you’re looking for low-maintenance or purely hands-off, this may not be your breed — and being realistic about that helps both dogs and families thrive.

At times, I do find myself feeling a little like a vending machine — and I imagine many breeders would understand that feeling.

I receive a high volume of enquiries and always try to respond with genuine care, kindness and thoughtfulness, no matter how brief the message may be. While I never expect anything in return, a simple “thank you” truly does mean a lot — it reminds me that there’s a real connection on the other side.

I completely understand that everyone has a picture in their mind of the perfect puppy. It’s such an exciting and emotional search. At the same time, my focus has always been on raising happy, well-adjusted puppies and thoughtfully matching them with the right homes — something that goes far beyond colour or specific traits.

I will always do my very best to accommodate preferences around s*x and colour, and I’m happy to share what I may be expecting from a litter based on DNA. However, I can never guarantee a specific s*x, colour, or perfect markings — nature doesn’t work that way, and honesty around that is important.

I also want to be clear that I don’t breed for colour or to meet demand. Every decision I make is centred around bettering the breed, and the health and welfare of my dogs will always come first.

I will always take the time to explain my approach, from what to expect with normal puppy behaviour through to how my waiting list works. Every response I send comes from a place of care, and a genuine desire to support both my puppies and the families who welcome them.

I also understand that not every breeder will be the right fit for every family, and that’s completely okay. For me, it’s about finding people who value the same things — kindness, honesty, and a shared commitment to doing what’s best for the puppy.

At Bellhaven, this is never just about placing puppies. It’s about relationships, trust, and creating the very best start for each little life.
Kindness, patience and understanding truly do make all the difference 🤍

🐾 Border Collies & Space — it’s not just about a big backyard

One thing I hear all the time is that Border Collies need a huge yard.
But honestly… it’s not really about the size — it’s about what you do with the space.
These dogs were bred to work alongside people, think for themselves, and solve problems all day long.
So it’s not just physical exercise they need — it’s mental stimulation too.
A good setup isn’t just “big”, it’s interesting.

🧡 They actually want to be with you
Border Collies are super people-focused.
Most of them would rather hang out with their family than be left alone in a massive yard.
Yes, they should learn to be okay on their own — but they really thrive on connection.

🧠 A bored Border Collie = trouble 😅
If they don’t have enough to do, they’ll make their own fun…
👉 barking
👉 digging
👉 chewing
👉 running the fence
Giving them things to do helps a lot:
• Kongs
• puzzle toys
• chews
• treat toys
It’s less about “keeping them busy” and more about letting them use their brain.

🌿 Make your yard more interesting
Think beyond flat grass.
Adding things like:
• logs
• ramps
• tunnels
• platforms
• plants & trees
…gives them chances to climb, balance, explore and investigate.

👃 Let them use their nose!
Dogs experience the world through smell way more than we do.
Easy ideas:
• hide treats
• snuffle areas
• digging spots
• different surfaces
• water to splash in
This kind of stuff tires them out mentally (which is gold 🙌)

☀️ Don’t forget the basics
They still need:
• fresh water
• comfy places to rest
• shade + shelter
• sunny spots in winter
Rest is just as important as activity.

🔒 Safety matters
They’re curious and will get into everything if they can.
Make sure you’ve got:
• secure fencing
• safe storage (chemicals etc.)
• no toxic plants
• gates that actually latch
Basically… think like a cheeky puppy 😂

🐾 Bottom line
A Border Collie doesn’t just need a big yard — they need the right kind of environment.
A smaller space that’s set up well can be way better than a huge empty one.
Because at the end of the day…
they weren’t just bred to run —
they were bred to think 🧠✨
And if you’ve owned one… you already know how clever (and cheeky) they can be 😅
