Breed of the day is the Chihuahua, the smallest dog breed with one of the biggest personalities.
Chihuahuas were bred to live closely with people, and that shows in how strongly many of them bond to their favorite person. They’re often alert, quick, and bold, which can look like “attitude” when they’re actually just doing their job: noticing everything and responding fast. The problem is that many Chihuahuas are treated like accessories instead of dogs, and when you constantly pick them up, excuse rude behavior, or skip training because they’re tiny, you can accidentally create fear and reactivity.
Ideal weight: most adult Chihuahuas are typically around 1.5–3 kg (3–6.5 lb), though some are naturally bigger. What matters most is body condition. You should be able to feel ribs with a light touch, see a slight waist from above, and avoid a round belly. Even small weight gain can stress joints and the heart over time.
Routine that works for most Chihuahuas:
Exercise: 30–60 minutes a day total, split into short walks and indoor play
Mental work: 5–10 minutes of training daily (they learn fast when it’s fun and consistent)
Socialization: gentle exposure to people, sounds, handling, and safe dogs to prevent fear based barking
Warmth and comfort: many get cold easily, so they do better with cozy rest spots and weather appropriate clothing
Health habits: dental care is huge in this breed, plus nail trims and regular checkups
When you treat a Chihuahua like a real dog, you often get a confident, funny, deeply loyal companion.
What’s the most Chihuahua thing you’ve ever seen one do: act fearless, act dramatic, or guard their person like a bodyguard?
