Mango was recently presented to our Urgent Care team after suffering superficial burns to his chest and neck.

Thankfully, Mango's owners acted quickly and provided excellent first aid at home before bringing him in for assessment. Their prompt response helped minimise further injury and gave Mango the best possible start to his recovery.

After a thorough examination, our team confirmed the burns were superficial. Mango was monitored closely, treated for his injuries, and wrapped up in a warm blanket when he became a little chilly—making sure he stayed as comfortable as possible during his visit.

Burn injuries can sometimes appear mild initially but may progress over the following hours, which is why veterinary assessment is always recommended.

Well done to Mango's family for their quick thinking and fantastic first aid efforts. We wish this brave boy a smooth and speedy recovery! 💜

Smokey recently presented through Urgent Care at The Austin Vet Specialists after developing weakness in all four legs. Smokey has a history of Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition where the discs between the bones of the spine can bulge or rupture and place pressure on the spinal cord.

A CT scan identified a problematic disc in Smokey’s neck region (between the C5–C6 vertebrae), and he underwent spinal surgery called a ventral slot procedure to help relieve the pressure on his spinal cord.

We’re very happy to report that Smokey has recovered well overnight following surgery and has been an absolute sweetheart with our nurses; soaking up all the cuddles and attention from the team. Recovery from spinal surgery involves close monitoring, pain relief, assisted mobility support, and lots of nursing care. Smokey has been doing really well so far.

We’re all wishing this lovely boy a smooth and comfortable recovery, and will be here to help support him and his humans throughout that journey.

Blocked cats are a true medical emergency.

FLUTD (Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease) can quickly become life-threatening if a cat is unable to urinate. Early treatment and supportive care can make a huge difference in recovery and long-term management.

Treatment may include:
- Pain relief and anti-inflammatory medication
- Fluid therapy for hydration and kidney support
- Urinary catheterisation to relieve blockages
- Ongoing management to reduce recurrence

If your cat is straining to urinate, vocalising in the litter tray, passing small amounts of urine, or unable to urinate, seek veterinary care immediately.

When you need us, we're here to help.

11-month-old English Staffy Steiger recently presented to The Austin Vet Specialists
after sustaining significant pelvic injuries in a traumatic accident involving farm machinery.

To fully assess the extent of his injuries, Steiger underwent an advanced CT scan of his pelvis. This imaging confirmed:
- A significantly displaced left sacroiliac luxation
- A left ischial fracture
- A left p***c fracture
- Thankfully, the acetabulum (hip socket) remained intact

Due to the degree of displacement and instability, surgical repair was recommended to restore pelvic alignment and help return normal weight-bearing function to the limb.

Steiger underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the left sacroiliac luxation, with the procedure aided by fluoroscopy imaging to allow precise surgical placement and alignment.

Throughout his stay, Steiger was the definition of resilient, remaining incredibly happy, affectionate, and full of tail wags despite the seriousness of his injuries. He is currently undergoing his post operative recovery at home, under the direction of our surgical team and is doing well.

13-week-old Border Collie x Poodle Lani recently visited The Austin Vet Specialists after eating some grapes.

Grapes and raisins can be toxic to dogs, and even small amounts may pose a serious risk, so Lani’s owner acted quickly and contacted us immediately after the incident.

Because she presented so promptly, our team was able to safely induce emesis (vomiting), which successfully retrieved the grape before it had been digested. If you suspect your pet has eaten something toxic, contacting your veterinarian promptly is always the best step.

When you need us, we're here to help.
