One of the most common mistakes we see with parrot nutrition is thinking that because something is healthy, more of it must be better. 🦜🥦🍓
Fruits and vegetables are absolutely great additions to your bird’s diet, but they should complement the diet, not become the diet.
Fruit, for example, contains natural sugars and is usually very easy for parrots to love. Give them the choice, and some birds will happily pick the sweetest pieces first and ignore everything else. That is why fruit is better offered in smaller amounts as a snack.
Vegetables are generally a much better everyday option than fruit, but even a big variety of vegetables alone does not necessarily provide the complete and consistent balance of protein, amino acids, vitamins and minerals that a pet parrot needs.
For most pet parrots, a high quality formulated pellet should make up the main part of the diet, while fresh vegetables, small portions of fruit and other healthy foods add variety, enrichment and extra nutrients.
And remember, portions matter too. A few nuts may look tiny to us, but for a small bird, they can represent a lot of calories and fat!
Nutrition is not just about choosing “healthy foods.” It is about balance, variety and the right proportions for your bird’s species, size, age and health.
Not sure if your bird’s diet is really balanced? Bring it up at your next checkup. Nutrition is one of the most important parts of preventive avian medicine.
